any man who says no to billy wilder has no taste in film.

- The Sleeper - 07-06-2005

seriously. I just got The Apartment on DVD. amazing movie

- Galt - 07-06-2005

There's not a single director I could mention.

Fincher obviously because I loved Seven and Fight Club. But The Game and Panic Room were shitty movies. So maybe it's not the director. I don't pay attention enough to movies to notice the touch of the director. I guess if it's good, I just give all the credit to the writer. Which is what I'd give Tarantino credit for, not the direction.

I didnt like The Game at first but on a second try I really liked it a lot, its a great movie. I think it was probably cause the first time I saw it was after a long day at work and it was in a theater full of canadians.

- Galt - 07-06-2005

While I try to suspend belief and enjoy movies for what they are, I have my limits. And like Saw, there were just too many holes and lazy plot development in The Game for me to enjoy it.

- GonzoStyle - 07-06-2005

I will agree with you there, Saw was a fuckin god awful movie. The acting alone made it terrible and I still have no clue what the fuckin Danny Glover was doing in the film. Woooooo the big shock that he was in the room the whole time, that doesnt make up for the prevoius 1 hour and 58 minutes.

But either way, I made up my list by going off the comparison of a favorite actor, its someone to me whose film I would see simply because he was in it. Like De Niro or Nicholson, I may not know what the movie is about but strictly cause they are in it, I will see the film.

I will see a scorsese film no matter who is in it or what its about simply because of him, same with the coen brothers and speilberg.

Hitchcock and wilder and kurosawa, after first disovering their films, I had to see whatever else they did simply because of their great direction.

Though I like some of woody allens films, I wouldnt see a film strictly cause its a woody allen film. It has to have some actors I like or a plot that may interest me.

Same goes for Francis Ford Coppola, though he directed The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, I cant say i'd see a film strictly off his name being on it.

Mike Curtiz directed several films that I love like Casablanca and Yankee Doodle Dandy but he was simply involved with them because he was such a prolific director and shot several films a year.

I guess by my own reasoning I'd have to also include Kevin Smith to my list, he falls into the category of me seeing a film simply because he directed it. Though I will be the first to say there are plenty of directors much better than him that are not on my list but this is about my favorites not a best of list.

Gilliam and Fincher over Wilder, for shame.

I'm just not wild over Wilder...what can i say.

love his movies..but not my fave director.

some notable flicks of his...

The Apartment (1960) his greatest
Some Like It Hot (1959) pretty good
The Seven Year Itch (1955) ok
Sabrina (1954) ok
Stalag 17 (1953) great
Sunset Blvd. (1950) great
The Lost Weekend (1945) ok
Double Indemnity (1944) great

Gilliam: Brazil, Fear & Loathing, Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, Holy Grail, Time Bandits

There is no question that Gilliam is great in my book.

Fincher is prob not deserving of my list. I remove him under the Gonzo scrutiny

- The Sleeper - 07-06-2005

I'm more into Wilder's writing than his directing, but he just so happened to direct most of the great movies he wrote.

I concur completely.

That's Ron Howard's schtick. Just get attached to popular movies and they'll think you're a good director

- GonzoStyle - 07-06-2005

Ron Howard really has soured over the last few years in my eyes, he's just making formulatic films designed to tug at the academy's heart strings.
