To be an officer in the NYPD, you need to take a psychological test, and they ask you why you want to be a cop. The people there are trained to see through the bullshit, and they don't allow people who they feel are dangerous don't get to go into the Academy. Maybe if the church instituted a screening process it could keep some, but not all men who have bad intentions out.

plus its in their nature to trust people. most of the priests that have done these things probably won't come off as bad people in normal conversations, and for the most part are probably very nice.

Bottom line is nothing is perfect. We are always gonna have crooked cops, dishonest politicians, pederast priests, dumb teachers, unclean cooks, and fucked up posters on message boards who find rape and suffering funny. You can not be perfect in any sense of the word, you can only hope to bat above .800 and make due with the best you have. As long as humans decide our fate and our system of living it can not be perfect because people are not perfect.
No matter how careful your screening is, no matter how perfect your tests are. You are always gonna have terrorist attacks, crazy cops, and priests who will stick their cocks in any hole avaiable.
