Actually, there was an extremely thought provoking article about this in Rolling Stone years ago...
The theory that seemed the most convincing was; The Oral Polio Vacc. that was being administered over there was grown using monkey livers instead of Chicken embryos...
The disease mutated from the symian form to what we have now...
I don't think I have heard a better explaination.
