Now I never bash people for the music I like because different people are into different stuff, but I can certainly bash the artist.

I'm really sad that they're going to be playing his music a million times this summer. Thank god I don't listen to the radio anymore.

Should I take the same approach next time I see a movie I don't like? I think you are giving some of these artists more credit then they deserve. You put them on a higher pedestal than other people. Some artists just aren't talented whether it be painters, musicians, filmmakers. Sure they had an intention in making it, but that doesn't make them immune to criticism. I recognize their right to create, but they should also recognize my right to call their work a piece of shit.

I just have a different view of it. I would look at it and say I don't like it, and you call it shit. Doesn't make either of us right or wrong. Just different. And maybe that is what the artist intended. For you to NOT like it.

I don't put them on a higher pedestal. Not at all. Do I respect them for having the balls to get their message out there? Yup, sure do. Doesn't mean it's good.


hell, when the Ramones first came out, people hated their music. Frankly it sucked. But the reason they became so popular is because they made it a point to be different, and to speak to the people that didn't have a place. That's where they drew their popularity from and became the innovators they are. Were they the best musician/songwriteres? hell no, but that's not what it's all about. I've known PLENTY of talented musician/songwriters that have never gotten anywhere because they didn't show any innovation.

Being good at something doesn't always mean you're going to appeal to people, and vice versa. You may suck at something, but it may catch someone's eye, and they may love what you do.

What arpi said is 100% correct. Art should provoke some kind of emotion. That's exactly what that grey canvas did.
