Quote:I think optonline is the best. So is iO, and everything else Cablevision has. It's all good. But then again, I get it all for FREE. My wife works there.

After Dolan and company downsize her and start charging you what will your opinion be then?

The company is on the up swing. Daddy's back in charge. Sonny boy fucked it up, but Daddy's back.
As for my wife, she is secure. Top dog in payroll. They wouldn't get paid without her.

I dunno, I've actually never had a problem with the iO menus. There are very few times that the menu has ANY pause - the first time accessing the menu after a reset, and just before midnight, when you move the cursor over past midnight and it pauses for a few seconds for "switching dates". Changing channels usually has no delay, or at its very worst, no more delay than a satellite dish would have. OnDemand is pretty slow, and has been pretty flaky in my area lately, but when it works it's the fuckin bomb.

And of course, Optimum Online is the BEST. How the fuck did you guys get it for 20 bucks a month, was that some sort of promotion? I'm paying 35, but I'd love to get it knocked down to 20.

As for Comcast - Optimum Online is better, definitely a noticeable speed difference (I had Comcast up until I moved in June).... that speed change has got to be attributed to the fact that OOL has no upload cap, while Comcast caps their upload speed at about 128kbps.

While I'm here, might as well contribute a lil trick.... this probably only works for the kind of box I have (the black Scientific Atlanta one, I know there's also some silver one)... hold the pause button on your remote until a light on the box starts blinking (I believe that's the mail light).... then hit page up. This puts you into all sorts of nifty screens where you can see the box's configuration. You probably saw the cable guy do this during your install, so see if your box obtained an IP address. My guy had to go into this screen quite a few times (box wasn't grabbing an IP - turned out something was down on their end - TV was fine but no OnDemand).... so I kept my eyes glued to the buttons he was pressing after he went in 2 or 3 times. :-D The screens don't really do anything for you, but it's just a nifty thing to see.

Also if you press page down, odd numbers appear on the box's display. I haven't been adventurous enough to explore what they do, for fear of fucking up my box.

I'm the one paying 19.95 - When I first signed up, they had different rates depending on what cable package you had. If you had Optimum Platimum (or whatever the "everything package" was), you paid $29.95/mo and it included the modem rental. I changed my cable package (with HBO & MSG I was close anyway ) since it was something like $12 more for cable but $10 less for internet.
When OOL grew, they changed their cost packaging, and did away with discount for top package - I then lowered my package, but still paid $29.95 including modem rental. At this time they started selling the modems, but they were charging $29.95 if you had your own modem. I went down when they had those cheap modem promotions, and asked them why I should buy a modem and pay $29.95 when I could just rent the modem and still pay $29.95. They spoke to supervisor and the agreed to give me the $10 discount to $19.95 - they had to do a couple of overrides to get that price.

About a year later they re-did their billing system. When I called about an OOL outage they told me that they looked at my records and I was paying too little. I told the whole story to the guy, and after checking with his supervisor 35 minutes later they found my records, and made a new note to keep my rate.

Whew.

On a side topic - I have the silver sony boxes. I wonder if there is any substantial differences in the 2 - like should I keep them (which were supposedly more expensive), or turn them in for Sci Atlantic.
