Quote:Billy Joel has compsed the soundtrack of America
so in the over 225 years we have been a nation you think billy joel is its finest composer? un-fucking believable!

- LyricalGomez - 02-03-2003

Eventhough nobody in our history could compare to the classical composers of Europe, the clear winner has to be George Gershwin

- Arpikarhu - 02-03-2003

gershwin-yes, billy joel- Rolleyes

- Arpikarhu - 02-03-2003

somebody else put bret easton ellis as writer! this is absurd. when you have the likes of twain, updike, london, hemingway, fitzgerald how can anyone pick a dime store novelist like ellis? ponderous!

- Arpikarhu - 02-03-2003

Quote:Notice they didn't put greatest inventor/pioneer cause they know no one comes close to Edison.
tesla was better. he didnt steall all of his ideas from his employees

- Keyser Soze - 02-03-2003

ellis was meant as a joke, i should have put hemingway or tennesee williams

Quote:i'm not into classical music, so billy joel is my choice of composer. sorry mr. highbrow
its not being highbrow to recognize that billy joel is negligble as a composer compared to the hundreds of great composers born in this country. and who said it had to be classical music.

- LyricalGomez - 02-03-2003

Billy Joel isn't fit to polish Gershwin's shoes

- Ronin - 02-03-2003

I didn't think of Mark Twain. I will change my answer.

Writer: <s>Tom Clancy</s> Mark Twain

- Arpikarhu - 02-03-2003

to read these lists you would think we formed as a union 15 years ago.

- Keyser Soze - 02-03-2003

name a non-classical composer fit to make this list.

- LyricalGomez - 02-03-2003

None of them are fit to make the list

- Arpikarhu - 02-03-2003

Quote:name a non-classical composer fit to make this list.
irving berlin, gershwin,adolph green,duke ellington..........

- Keyser Soze - 02-03-2003

the only one that appeals to me on that list is ellington.

maybe some of the great jazz composers, coltrane, miles davis.

- LyricalGomez - 02-03-2003

This isn't a list about what appeals to you, this is a list of greatest people/places/things from your country.

- Keyser Soze - 02-03-2003

how could i call something great if it didn't appeal to me?

"hey i just saw the greatest movie ever made, but it really didn't appeal to me"

- LyricalGomez - 02-03-2003

You can appreciate something even if you don't like it.

I may not like a certain painter's works, but I can still appreciate it as being great art. I personally don't find Vivaldi's music appealing, but I can still appreciate him as a great composer.
