figured I would put my 2 cents in.

dvd as a storage format does not mean that it is using the same codec as a dvd you would buy at a store. Those discs floating around the city are in mpeg-1 (vcd format) that use the dvd media instead of cd. It appears you are confusing media with codec. Hell I could put mpeg-2 movie (dvd codec) on a regular cd if I wanted to (as long as it was under 20 minutes of vide that is). And as far as making the video better.....ahhh no. I will give you an old video saying "dirty in-dirty out" the most you could hope for is blurring the Hell out of the video to hide compression artifacts.

Hey AM, just for the record you can get a pioneer dvr-104 oem for about $250 http://www.esbuy.com/piondvbardri.html This is the most compatible dvd burner on the planet. Its the same one that comes with new macs. IMO worth every penny.
You can also get dvd-r 4.7 general media for about $1.10. not to shabby for a 100% perfect copy of your favorite dvd's. (though you will have to rip just the movie in most cases to fit on a single layer dvd-r) I recomend ifoEdit for stripping the VOB streams of your dvd's. (i love talking in these cool bracket things)

The dvr-104 is without a doubt the best burner now but I'd rather wait especially since Pioneer is coming out with a 4x burner soon and I don't really have a need for a dvd burner at the moment. But even if I had the money I'd wait till the next generation so I could burn at 4x.

yeah I understand waiting.....but as of right now even 2x media is about 30% more than 1x . So I can only imagine how much 4x will be......also I wont even use 2x now becouse I heard that the compatibilty level may drop on set top boxes. Either way its always good to wait for the best price....but where is the fun in that? hehe
