Poland Admits Iraq Combat Role After News Photos
By Douglas Busvine
WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland admitted on Monday that its elite GROM commando unit had taken part in the U.S.-led attack on Iraq (news - web sites) after the soldiers posed for a Reuters news photographer.
The Defense Ministry had denied that GROM (Thunder) special forces were involved in combat, but on Monday it confirmed their participation after dailies splashed photographs of the soldiers in the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr, where U.S.-led troops are battling pockets of Iraqi resistance.
Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski refused, however, to divulge details of the troops' role in supporting the main U.S.-British force fighting to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).
"We are determined not to comment on secret operations," Szmajdzinski told reporters, saying only that GROM troops were operating "in the coastal region" of Iraq and in Gulf waters.
"You don't comment about the theater of operations because that would give away information about our capability...this is secret," he added.
GROM is an SAS-style commando unit which has seen recent action in Afghanistan (news - web sites). It is one of the few highly trained units in Poland's armed forces, which are mostly underfunded and still rely on outdated Soviet-era equipment.
Poland, a NATO (news - web sites) member whose government has supported the tough U.S. line against Baghdad, sent 200 troops to the Gulf in what they originally said was a supporting, non-combat, role.
The Reuters photographs showed masked GROM soldiers taking prisoners, scrawling graffiti on a portrait of Saddam and posing with U.S. Navy (news - web sites) Seals holding up a U.S. flag.
"These photos shouldn't have happened," said Szmajdzinski. "The next time it will definitely be with the Polish flag."
Surveys show that most people in this east European country of 38 million do not want Polish troops to take active part in fighting in Iraq, although a majority backs an auxiliary role.
Szmajdzinski denied the government had failed to tell the nation that Polish troops would take part in combat.
"We sent our contingent to take part in military operations, not to be observers -- that was obvious," he said. "Nobody misled anyone."

I guess that's why they always jobbed to whoever attacked them. Interesting.

Gonzo...from foxnews...
Quote:Central Command spokesman Group Capt. Al Lockwood confirmed reports that roads and bridges to Baghdad had been wired with explosives.
"We're not surprised Saddam wired bridges to destroy them and the infrastructure of his own city," Lockwood told Fox News. "This is how Saddam operates."
so I guess your suspicions of him being prepared to blow the whole place to Hell if he loses are accurate - but he's a really nice guy :crackhead:
- Danked - 03-26-2003
I was his official painter for a number of years and I can attest to the fact that he is indeed a swell guy.

your portrait of him with a dancing banana on his nose is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I've ever seen.

To understand our future we must first know our history.
I said it a million times, hitler and saddam share many characteristics.
First and foremost is their fear of ending up like the dictators of their times. Hitler feared ending up like Mussolini and refused to be taken alive. Saddam fears ending up like Milosevic, he doesn't want to be paraded before a tribunal and end up in enemy hands.
Like Hitler in the end he cares not for his own people, like hitler he has been known to kill his own people. He has killed more muslims than anyone in history using chemicals.
Like Hitler he would rather destroy his own country then let the allies take it for themselves, he will go with it.
I will not be surprised to see saddam blow baghdad and take as many lives as he can along with his own. He will go down as a ruthless tyrant either way.
- HedCold - 03-28-2003
i dont think hes going to blow up iraq, for the most part, because he wants us to do it for him to make us look even worse to the rest of the world

You're thinking rationally for a man who is anything but.
- Cowboy - 03-28-2003
I didn't read the whole thread, so I hope I'm not sounding redundant.. This is just my view:
I believe that the war is justified. The removal of Saddam from a position of power is in the best interest of the world. Not just the United States, not just for the citizens of Iraq, but for the good of mankind in general. This man has delusional visions of grandeure and believes he can play god. Its just time to oust him before he starts Nuclear World War 1.
- Hey Ladi - 03-28-2003
so where are the Canadians :clueless:
in other news ... my cousin is being sent over
I'm alternating happay & sad for that ...
1. he gets his turn, he did bother to join after all
2. hope he comes back ... in one piece ... alive
- Rape Fantasizer - 03-29-2003
Sorry to hear about your cousin ladi, hope all works out for him. It seems like we do more damage on ourselves than the Iraqis are doing. We need to be a little more careful over there and stop with the accidents.
- JimmyBlueEyes - 03-29-2003
OK The gloves should come off now. I was kinda iffy on this whole thing but now...FUCK THE IRAQIS!!!! Using fucking suicide bombers against our troops?? It's time to start dropping those big 10,000 and 20,000 pound bombs on these fuckers. Execute the POWs Start playing hteir game and let's see how long this shit lasts.
- Keyser Soze - 03-29-2003
i agree with HedCold, i think we are playing right into Saddams hands.
- GonzoStyle - 03-29-2003
I think the powers that be are well aware of that actually. They have stated many times that saddam will try to draw out the war in hopes of many civilian casualties so that a world body somehow steps in, or that the americans themselves cry out like they did in somalia.

Something tells me if and when there is a 1st nuclear war, there won't ever be a second. Don't think you needed to specify the number there buddy. ;-)
Anyway, I didn't see this posted anywhere else on the site so I was wondering how many of you heard about this. Shit like this truly makes me want to kill another human being.

Quote:Stand Up for America Rally Speech By: Beth Chapman
I'm here tonight because men and women of the United States military have given their lives for my freedom. I am not here tonight because Sheryl Crowe, Rosie O'Donnell, Martin Sheen, George Clooney, Jane Fonda or Phil Donahue, sacrificed their lives for me.
If my memory serves me correctly, it was not movie stars or musicians, but the United States Military who fought on the shores of Iwo Jima, the jungles of Vietnam, and the beaches of Normandy. Tonight, I say we should support the President of the United States and the U.S. Military and tell the liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippy, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and music and whine somewhere else.
After all, if they lived in Iraq, they wouldn't be allowed the freedom of speech they're being given here today. Ironically, they would be put to death at the hands of Sadam Husssein or Osama Bin Laden. I want to know how the very people who are against war because of the loss of life, can possibly be the same people who are for abortion?
They are the same people who are for animal rights but against the rights of the unborn. The movie stars say they want to go to Iraq and serve as "human shields" for the Iraqis. I say let them buy a one-way ticket and go.
No one likes war. I hate war! But the one thing I hate more is the fact that this country has been forced into war-innocent people have lost their lives - - and there but for the grace of God, it could have been my brother, my husband, or even worse my own son.
On December 7, 1941, there are no records of movie stars treading the blazing waters of Pearl Harbor.
On September 11, 2001; there are no photos of movie stars standing as "human shields" against the debris and falling bodies ascending from the World Trade Center. There were only policemen and firemen - -underpaid civil servants who gave their all with nothing expected in return.
When the USS Cole was bombed, there were no movie stars guarding the ship - - where were the human shields then?
If America's movie stars want to be human shields, let them shield the gang-ridden streets of Los Angeles, or New York City, let them shield the lives of the children of North Birmingham whose mothers lay them down to sleep on the floor each night to shelter them from stray bullets.
If they want to be human shields, I say let them shield the men and women of honesty and integrity that epitomizes courage and embody the spirit of freedom by wearing the proud uniforms of the United States Military. Those are the people who have earned and deserve shielding!
Throughout the course of history, this country has remained free, not because of movie stars and liberal activists, but because of brave men and women who hated war too. However, they lay down their lives so that we all may live in freedom. After all - "What greater love hath no man, that he lay down his life for his friend," or in this case a country.
We should give our military honor and acknowledgement and not let their lives be in vain. If you want to see true human shields, walk through Arlington Cemetery. There lie human shields, heroes, and the BRAVE Americans who didn't get on television and talk about being a human shield - they were human shields.
I thank God tonight for freedom - - those who bought and paid for it with their lives in the past - - those who will protect it in the present and defend it in the future.
America has remained silent too long! God-fearing people have remained silent too long!
We must lift our voices united in a humble prayer to God for guidance and the strength and courage to sustain us throughout whatever the future may hold.
After the tragic events of Sept. 11th, my then eleven -year-old son said terrorism is a war against them and us and if you're not one of us, then you're one of them.
So in closing tonight, let us be of one accord, let us stand proud, and let us be the human shields of prayer, encouragement and support for the President, our troops and their families and our country.
May God bless America, the land of the free, the home of the brave and the greatest country on the face of this earth!

Attacks on the intellectual muscle of President Bush and other members of his administration have become popular sport for some vocal members of the Hollywood anti-war crowd.
Recently, on the Internet, we found a comparison of some of the educational accomplishments of those criticized and those doing the the howling.
Thanks to a number of listeners to The WOR Morning Show with Ed Walsh for having passed this along.....

While comparing the education and experience of these two groups, we should also remember that President Bush and his cabinet are briefed daily, even hourly, on the War on Terror and threats to our security. They are privy to information gathered around the world concerning the Middle East , the threats to America , the intentions of terrorists and terrorist-supporting governments. They are in constant communication with the CIA, the FBI, Interpol, NATO, The United Nations, our own military, and that of our allies around the world. We cannot simply believe that we have full knowledge of the threats because we watch CNN!! We cannot believe that we are in any way as informed as our leaders.
These celebrities have no intelligence-gathering agents, no fact-finding groups, no insight into the minds of those who would destroy our country. They only have a deep seated hatred for all things Republican. By nature, and no one knows quite why, the Hollywood elitists detest Conservative views and anything that supports or uplifts the United States of America . The silence was deafening from the Left when Bill Clinton bombed a pharmaceutical factory outside of Khartoum , or when he attacked the Bosnian Serbs in 1995 and 1999. He bombed Serbia itself to get Slobodan Milosevic out of Kosovo, and not a single peace rally was held. When our Rangers were ambushed in Somalia and 18 young American lives were lost, not a peep was heard from Hollywood . Yet now, after our nation has been attacked on its own soil, after 3,000 Americans were killed by freedom-hating terrorists while going about their routine lives, they want to hold rallies against the war. Why the change? Because an honest, God-fearing Republican sits in the White House.
Another irony is that in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was in office, the Hollywood group aligned themselves with disarmament groups like SANE, FREEZE and PEACE ACTION, urging our own government to disarm and freeze the manufacturing of any further nuclear weapons, in order to promote world peace. It is curious that now, even after we have heard all the evidence that Saddam Hussein has chemical, biological and is very close to obtaining nuclear weapons, their is no cry from this group for HIM to disarm. They believe we should leave him alone in his quest for these weapons of mass destruction, even though it is certain that these deadly weapons will eventually be used against us in our own cities.
So why the hype out of Hollywood ? Could these celebrities believe that since they draw such astronomical salaries, they are entitled to also determine the course of our Nation? That they can make viable decisions concerning war and peace? Did Michael Moore have the backing of the Nation when he recently thanked France , on our behalf, for being a "good enough friend to tell us we were wrong"? I know for certain he was not speaking for me. Does Sean Penn fancy himself a Diplomat, in going to Iraq when we are just weeks away from war? Does he believe that his High School Diploma gives him the knowledge (and the right) to go to a country that is controlled by a maniacal dictator, and speak on behalf of the American people? Or is it the fact that he pulls in more money per year than the average American worker will see in a lifetime? Does his bank account give him clout?
The ultimate irony is that many of these celebrities have made a shambles of their own lives, with drug abuse, alcoholism, numerous marriages and divorces, scrapes with the law, publicized temper tantrums, etc. How dare they pretend to know what is best for an entire nation! What is even more bizarre is how many people in this country will listen and accept their views, simply because they liked them in a certain movie, or have fond memories of an old television sitcom!
It is time for us, as citizens of the United States , to educate ourselves about the world around us. If future generations are going to enjoy the freedoms that our forefathers bequeathed us, if they are ever to know peace in their own country and their world, to live without fear of terrorism striking in their own cities, we must assure that this nation remains strong. We must make certain that those who would destroy us are made aware of the severe consequences that will befall them.
Yes, it is a wonderful dream to sit down with dictators and terrorists and join hands, singing Cumbaya and talking of world peace. But it is not real. We did not stop Adolf Hitler from taking over the entire continent of Europe by simply talking to him. We sent our best and brightest, with the strength and determination that this Country is known for, and defeated the Nazi regime. President John F. Kennedy did not stop the Soviet ships from unloading their nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962 with mere words. He stopped them with action, and threat of immediate war if the ships did not turn around. We did not end the Cold War with conferences. It ended with the strong belief of President Ronald Reagan... PEACE through STRENGTH."
