Shortly after the probe was ordered, the station announced it had canceled the program that pushed the stunt. Three people face criminal charges after a couple -- encouraged by "shock jocks" going by the names Opie and Anthony -- chose New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral for sex. They were arrested along with a station employee who was broadcasting an account of the incident. "Today Commissioner Michael Powell has ordered the enforcement bureau of the commission to proceed immediately with a prompt investigation of this matter," an FCC spokesman said in a prepared statement. Another commissioner, Michael Copps, suggested that the FCC consider revoking WNEW-FM's license. That would be an unprecedented step -- the FCC, in recent times, has never taken a station away from a major media company. WNEW-FM bills roughly $19 million per year, and is worth in the neighborhood of $150 million, according to radio analysts. The station was already in trouble with the FCC for alleged indecency on the "Opie and Anthony" program. The FCC in June moved to fine the station $21,000 for three broadcasts the commission found to be "patently offensive," including one audio mix that "inescapably refers to oral sex between a daughter and her father." Viacom referred questions on the matter to its Infinity Broadcasting subsidiary, which issued this prepared statement: "WNEW and Infinity Broadcasting do not in any way condone the actions that took place last week. We have taken steps to ensure that this type of incident does not happen again. The station's general manager and program director have been suspended, and no new 'Opie and Anthony' shows will be broadcast while the matter is reviewed. Once again, we apologize to all of those who were offended." Later, the radio station issued a statement saying, "Based on recent events, 'The Opie and Anthony Show' has been canceled, and will be replaced by other programming beginning tomorrow." The fact they have fired them is more offensive than what that fucking couple did!! This is all that faggot mecurio's fault!!!! :burnfucker: :fuckoff: Fuck you FCC and all catholic groups!! I find the fact that little boys were touched by your fcuking priests and you did nothing about it the most offinsive thing ever!!!! - GonzoStyle - 08-22-2002    Hell hath frozen over. - virgingrrl - 08-22-2002 poo. :disappointed: - GonzoStyle - 08-22-2002 20 bucks says they are up on another form of radio within a month. - windowlck - 08-22-2002 [quote]WNEW Shock Jocks Fired (1010 WINS) Aug. 22, 2002 5:13 pm WNEW-FM has issued the following press release: Based on recent events, The Opie and Anthony Show has been cancelled, and will be replaced by other programming beginning tomorrow. Also on Thursday, the top U.S. communications regulator ordered an investigation Thursday into complaints that shock jocks allegedly broadcast a live, eyewitness account of a couple having sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral. A Virginia couple was arrested Aug. 15 after allegedly having sex in a vestibule just a few feet from worshippers in the landmark Manhattan church. The encounter was described as it happened during the "Opie and Anthony" show, WNEW-FM radio's popular drive-time program that stations around the United States carry. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell directed the agency's enforcement bureau to begin an investigation immediately, spokesman David Fiske said. If the FCC finds that a station violated federal indecency laws, the penalty is typically a fine ranging from $5,000 to $30,000, Fiske said. The amount can be higher depending on the case, he said. The broadcast was part of a regular feature on the program where couples can win prizes for having sex in risky places. The couple's attorney has said they were just simulating sex. FCC Commissioner Michael Copps has said he received hundreds of outraged phone calls and e-mails about the broadcast. He said the agency should consider revoking the station's license. Opie and Anthony have attracted controversy in recent years. Westchester County, N.Y., officials last year pulled an ad for a radio show from 40 county buses dominated by the word "WOW" after they learned that the acronym stood for "Whip 'em Out Wednesday" and is meant to urge women to bare their breasts. Westchester's views were not shared by the MTA or New Jersey Transit, as WNEW's "WOW" ads did appear on their stations, buses and trains. In 1998, Opie and Anthony were fired from a Massachusetts station after announcing on April Fool's Day that Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino had died in a car crash in Florida.
