Rangers Acquire Pavel Bure from Panthers

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired all-star right wing Pavel Bure, along with Florida’s second round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, from the Florida Panthers in exchange for defensemen Igor Ulanov and Filip Novak, along with the Rangers’ first and second round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
"To be able to acquire a player of Pavel's stature is a rarity in this business, " said Sather. "He has proven over his career that he is one of the finest players in the world and we are looking forward to seeing him bring his elite level of play to New York."
Bure, 30, led the Panthers in scoring with 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 points in 56 contests this season. He also led the club in goals (22), power play goals (9) and shots on goal (233). Bure became the sixth fastest player in National Hockey League history to reach the 400-goal plateau when he tallied his 16th goal of the year on January 26 vs. Boston. In addition, he registered his 700th NHL point with an empty net goal on December 15 at Long Island.
A veteran of 11 NHL seasons with the Vancouver Canucks and the Florida Panthers, Bure has appeared in 651 career NHL games, registering 406 goals and 323 assists for 729 points, along with 462 penalty minutes. A NHL First Team All-Star for the 1993-94 season and a Second Team All-Star twice (1999-2000 and 2000-01), he has participated in six NHL All-Star games (1993, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001) and was the 1992 recipient of the Calder Trophy, given annually to the NHL’s Rookie of the Year.
With 59 goals in the 2000-01 season, Bure captured his second consecutive Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, given annually the NHL’s top goal scorer and established a NHL record by accounting for 29.5% of the Florida Panthers’ goals last season. He is just the 12th player to lead the league in goals in back-to-back seasons. In addition, Bure is one of only six NHL players to score 50 goals for two different teams. Among the top 100 NHL goal scorers of all-time, he ranks first overall in goals per game percentage (62.5%). Only Wayne Gretzky (198) and Mike Bossy (173) scored more goals in their first three NHL seasons than Bure (154). He has tallied 50-or-more goals in five of his eleven NHL seasons.
As a member of the Vancouver Canucks, Bure appeared in 428 contests, registering 254 goals and 224 assists for 478 points, along with 328 penalty minutes. He ranks third on the Canucks’ all-time goal scoring list with 254 goals, trailing only Stan Smyl (262) and Trevor Linden (259). In addition, Bure ranks among the franchise leaders in several categories, including: assists (8th, 224), game-winning goals (1st, 32), shorthanded goals (1st, 24), power play goals (4th, 69) and hat tricks (tied for 1st, 10). He holds several team scoring records, including: most goals in a season (60, 1992-93 and 1993-94), most points in a season (110, 1992-93), most shots (407, 1992-93) and longest goal-scoring streak (eight games, March 8 through March 25, 1994).
In his four seasons with the Florida Panthers, Bure collected 152 goals and 99 assists for 251 points in 223 contests. He currently ranks fourth on the Florida’s all-time scoring list with 251 points and second on the club’s all-time goal-scoring list with 152 tallies. In addition, Bure ranks among the franchise leaders in several categories, including: assists (tied for 7th, 97), game-winning goals (1st, 23), shorthanded goals (2nd, 9), power play goals (2nd, 44) and hat tricks (1st, 10). He also holds several season scoring records for the Panthers, including: most goals (59, 2000-01), most points (94, 1999-00), most shots (384, 2000-01) and longest goal-scoring streak (seven games, March 11 through March 23, 2001).
The 5-10, 189-pound right wing has collected 35 goals and 35 assists for 70 points, along with 74 penalty minutes in 64 career playoff contests. He was a key member of the Vancouver Canucks team that won the 1994 Western Conference championship and extended the Rangers to Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals before being defeated, leading all scorers with 16 tallies.

Bure was a member of the Russian Olympic squad at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan and the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, capturing a silver medal in 1998 and a bronze medal in 2002. In addition, he was voted the Best Forward at the 1998 Olympic Games, leading all scorers with nine goals in six matches. He also was a member of the Russian team at the 1989, 1990 and 1991 World Junior Championships in capturing a gold medal in 1989 and a silver medal in 1990 and 1991. Bure ranks as the all-time leader in World Junior Championship goal scoring, tallying 27 goals in 21 games and ranks third all-time in scoring with 39 points.
The Moscow, Russia native was originally Vancouver’s sixth round choice, 113th overall, in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. Bure was traded to the Florida Panthers, along with Brad Ference, Bret Hedican and a third round choice in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft (Robert Fried), from Vancouver in exchange for Kevin Weekes, Mike Brown, Ed Jovanovski, Dave Gagner and first round choice in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft (Nathan Smith).
Ulanov, 30, has appeared in 39 games with the Rangers this season, collecting six assists and 53 penalty minutes. He was signed as a free agent by the Rangers on July 1, 2000. Novak, 19, has appeared in 60 games with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League (WHL), registering 12 goals and 46 assists for 58 points, along with 125 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the second round, 64th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
