Is popup advertising fair to the consumer?

Now, I see the other side of it. Because of the influx, we now have companies offering us broadband, more users to download files from, more interesting sites to visit (assuming said site doesn't have popups, and yes, everybodys favorite, the message boards. Where I can argue and discuss even the most inane topic with people I don't even know.

The internet for the most part is great now.
