In Saving Private Ryan: Why didn't they just blow up the bridge right away? Why wait around when you know you can't hold it against a superior force?

I think that they may have mentioned it in the movie. I don't remember, but I do know from my WWII history, that that was the last bridge crossing that river, and they needed to keep it intact to move allied forces back and forth across the river.
