The US was already pretty good at creating temporary pontoon bridges for crossing rivers. Losing the "last bridge across the river" would only cause a delay of a few hours while the army corp of engineers put a replacement together. Inconvenient when your in the middle of a major offensive and have momentum on your side, but not major.
