Patience has never been a strength of former Michigan quarterback Drew Henson, but he said he's gradually learning its value.
Henson has had his share of struggles as a third baseman with the Columbus Clippers, the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate. He decided in March to give up his senior season with the Wolverines and has impatiently anticipated a three-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens that concludes tonight at Toledo's Ned Skeldon Stadium.
He spent Wednesday night at his parents' Brighton home and then played host to several former Michigan teammates at Thursday night's doubleheader. Several more Wolverines will attend the game tonight.
"That's why I've been looking forward to coming here, so I can see my friends from Ann Arbor," Henson said.
Since being called up in mid-June, Henson has struggled, and he's heard the boos -- although he's not sure if they're Clippers fans or bitter Ohio State fans, who saw him lead the Wolverines to a 38-26 victory last November. He was batting .209 before Thursday's game with 29 hits and 48 strikeouts in 139 at-bats. He has four home runs.
"The booing has died down," Henson said. "But I could care less about the booing. I had 10 times more boos when we played at Ohio State."
Henson's average was up to .250 before the All-Star break, but then, he said, he lost his rhythm.
"I started to get it back three or four days ago," Henson said. "I'm seeing the ball better in batting-practice drills, and I'm feeling the best I have all summer. I have to be patient. I look at this as a learning experience, and in time it will come together.
"As of today, I'm not ready to play in the big leagues. I'm also not putting pressure on myself. I'm motivated and I'm being patient at the same time, and that's something I'm working on."
