Sources close to the situation are saying that it was actually X-Pac who was pushing for a release from WWE. WWE was reportedly wanting to keep on paying him while they sorted things out and figure out exactly what to do with him in the future. However, he has been unhappy with the way WWE has used him over the past couple of months and just wanted out. No word on what his plans are now, but rest assure, there will be plenty of indie, Japanese feds and NWA-TNA managers calling him up.
