with Time Warner, if you have an HDTV then you can get an HD cable box OR an HD DVR. The HD cable box costs the same as a regular box, the DVR is the same also but you gotta pay $9/month for the DVR service.
As for HD programming, you get the locals in HD (assuming it exists - My9 isnt available in HD for me), and if you sub to HBO and/or Showtime you get those HD channels as well. There's an HD pacakage thats extra, I think $10 more, that has concernt, movies & shit along with ESPNHD - I dont sub to that but I'm thinking to dropping Showtime & getting the HD package (it'll be a wash, i think).
HD quality from the cable co. largely depends on the signal you get, so as mentioned one channel might look amazing and another not as nice - but if you have an extensive DVD collection you really should go for the HD set.
