The govt's policy in the old west times was "No indians, no bison." Before western expansion, there were 30-60 million bison in N. America up until 1890 at which time there were only 500-900 left thanks to years of slaughter sponsored mainly by railroad companies. Now there are about 150,000 bison in managed herds. I read that.
