wav files provide original quality but file sizes are usually too big (unless you are talking about short clips such as sound fx). i know for my Nirvana bootleg ftp, I only allow disc images or shn/mkw files. shn is a lossless compression that allows 40+ MB wav files to be shrunk down to around 10 MB or so. you can find out more about shn/mkw HERE.
