Quote:Opie And Anthony Show Cancelled After Sex Stunt In St. Patrick's Cathedral
AUGUST 23RD, 2002
Two popular shock jocks have been pulled off the radio waves.
Gregg Hughes and Anthony Cumia, of WNEW-FM's "Opie and Anthony Show," were fired Thursday by station owner Infinity Broadcasting. The two were taken off the air after sponsoring a stunt which broadcasted a Virginia couple allegedly having sex at the St. Patrick's Cathedral.
The broadcast was part of a regular feature on the show in which couples can win prizes for having sex in risky places.
The show prompted mass criticism from groups like the Catholic League, which filed a formal complaint with the FCC. The pair was pulled off the air Monday, three days after the stunt aired.
"Based on recent events, the Opie and Anthony Show has been canceled," WNEW said in a statement, "and will be replaced by other programming beginning Friday."
Infinity also suspended the station's general manager and program director.
The DJs and the couple now face charges including public lewdness and obscenity. The FCC is also investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, an Opie and Anthony fan website is trying to bring fans of the radio show together for a rally Friday afternoon.
Supporters are being asked to gather near the Brooklyn Diner at 57th Street and 7th Avenue at 3 p.m.
Got this off the NY1 website. Could they be talking about OA.com, or opieandanthony.com?!?
