Actually, they're very clean and, if you go into the good ones, the food is excellent. If you go into the bad ones, it's like fast food. Completely unrelated to cab drivers.
I've had Indian for lunch in NY, but it's even better over here for some reason.
If you've never tried it, order the Buttered Chicken with rice and Nan (a type of flat bread). It's chunks of chicken (like you get for chinese food) covered in a yellow sauce that looks like mustard but tastes like butter with spices in it.
And Tandori Chicken kicks ass. It's cooked on a scewer in a brick oven. Comes out red from the seasoning.
There's also an excellent lamb dish I can't remember the name of.
