if i ever get called for jury duty im gonna just tell them i know the defendant and call it a day

Genius I mentioned that, lol. It may get you excused from sitting on that jury. But then you have to go back to the waiting room and wait to be called for a different case. Plus they know most any trick you can pull, you might be asked where you know this person from. They don't give you any particulars on the person like an address so you'd have a tough time saying you grew up with him. If you don't get called to sit on a jury after 2 complete days then you are excused but you can listen up to 8-12 cases in those two days so more likely than not you will sit on one.
