it depends on if you're gonna put strips or tiles in. The strips are a tough install. If you've never done it, hire a professional. The tiles are a cake walk. Just have a table saw handy. if you want it to look right and you've never done it, hire someone. Trust me, if you fuck it up, it looks ugly.
Another option for a wood floor is Pergo. It's a big jigsaw puzzle. No nails, no glue, no nothing. The floor actually floats ontop of what ever surface you put it on. Concrete, linoleum, tile. real simple to install as long as you start the right way. I helped a friend install one. it took us a day to do a fairly good sized basement. The only thing to keep in mind is that if you put it in a basement, bathroom or kitchen, you have to use Pergo Glue. It seals the puzzle so water doesn't go through the crack to the subfloor. it runs about $6 a sq foot, $9 installed by a professional
