Cheap wine - That tastes good.

over the past couple years my tastes have changed and I am really enjoying a glass of wine, two or three with a meal.
Instead of just cracking open a beer.

Now while I enjoy good wine,
I don't enjoy paying for it. So my quest is always to find wines that drink well in the 8-15 dollar range.

I have become a big fan of Toasted Head as of late,
any others come to mind?

Can't remember the name, but there's a wine for $3.00 a bottle that comes in all kinds of fruit flavors. Whenever I get together with my friends, we get that for the girls. We NEVER get enough. It goes too fast.

As for $8-$15, go out to the vineyards on Long Island. you can do a tasting and then buy bottles of what you like pretty cheap. There are several out there my friends really enjoy going to. At least one has a resteraunt where you can enjoy your selection with dinner. Great date places.

R.H. Phillips is actually the winery I bought stock in to get wine cheaper by the case. R.H. Phillips makes Toasted Head right outside of Sacramento. I love Toasted Head and R.H. Phillips chardonney (when I drank it!)

Rombauer is my current favorite. I highly recommend it...

yeah, the second label works well.
I like Shooting Star, Steele's second label.
and some of the estate bottled wines are a good buy.
the Rodney Strong Chalk Hill is much cheaper than the real deal.

there are many excellent washington state wines too.

yeah but sometimes it just doesn't feel justified paying such exorbitant amounts of money for 1 bottle of wine.

It exceeds your $15 limit (it costs about $20), but I like the Ruffino Classico Chianti. Tried it at my buddy's rehearsel dinner for his wedding.

The limit is soft.
It is nice to know some more expensive ones to try,
I was just trying to keep the cheap wine focus in order to qualify for the trailer park.
Cakebread, Chalk Hill, Steele are some of my faves that are a little more expensive,
Benziger is decent.
and I remember fondly when Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio was cheap.

If there any kind of rule for which goes with what kind of food? Red or White?

I know as far as Red = red meats, white = light foods like fish, Riesling = dessert..... but what about those "middle foods" like chicken?

screw that, try a desert wine,
there are a few that are tremendous.... a little $$$ though.

I think the rules for wines are getting somewhat relaxed,
I think people are tending to drink more of what they like than what they are supposed to drink with the meal.

No matter what I am eating,
If I plan to drink more than a couple glasses, I drink white.
Reds in quantity give me a headache.

usually white, but depends how it's cooked. with a heavier sauce etc. you could go red without raising an eyebrow.
