| O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | grimie, most of the questions that we hear is about the pitching, so this thread has moved in that direction. I don't think the hitting is a definite, by any means. The Mets were horrible offensively last year, and even on offense they are relying on question marks (Vaughn to rebound from injuries, Burnitz to hit in a pitchers park, and Alfonzo to return to 2000 form). As far as playing like a team, it depends on what you mean. The whole team needs to play well, yes. But Baseball is basically an individual sport, so unlike football (for example), the sum is rarely greater than the parts. And Paper Doll, some of here are a little sensitive to Met bashing which has gone around here - that is why the Crack committee was originally formed (or so CF leads me to believe). However in the spirit of a new season, I for one am resisting the bashing of other teams (with the exception of the Atlanta Confederates, who should get in the coffin and die ;) )  | ||||

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Yes, this thread has been based on the pitching staff more than the hitters, and the more ive been thinking about it, the bottom of our lineup is suspect. Payton MUST come through this year, especially since we dont have Shinjo to replace him. Ordonez must have a batting average higher than his weight, and i will admit that Burnitz might be a rally killer with all of his K's. Mets left-hander Mark Guthrie threw a couple of pitches inside to Brian Jordan _ the first Dodgers hitter after New York catcher Mike Piazza was struck on the left forearm by Eric Gagne in the fourth inning. Jordan was brushed back by one pitch, and the second grazed him on the leg. After the game, Jordan accused Mets manager Bobby Valentine of ordering Guthrie to retaliate for the pitch that left Piazza with a welt. "Why would I do that?" Valentine said. "How exactly did I do that, before he got to the mound or after he got to the mound? "I heard he (Jordan) was standing in back of the batter's box jumping away from the pitches before they were thrown. Maybe he thought he was supposed to get hit." ---------------------------------------- What is it about the Mets that they always seem to get involved in these? When I initially read the article the first thing that came to mind was retaliation (if you can call it that) to Jordan's late season Mets raping last year..Funny that of all batters to plunk it was him. Now, while i would like to say "this is only preseason", our starters have sucked pretty much throughout the preseason so far. Astacio was horrible today. Of course, i am not going to push the panic button yet. But it would be encouraging if Astacio or D'Amico or Estes would have a quality start pretty soon. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | CF, D'Amico had a quality start last time out (yeah, it was against the Royals). Astacio's outing was attributable to mechanics. According to Valentine (I think it was him that I heard), he started opening up early in his third inning. That is the kind of thing that spring training is to work on. Dicky Gonzalez's outing have bothered me. He isn't great, but he was always a guy who got the most out of his stuff, kinda like Bobby (righty) Jones. This spring he has been simply awful. Luckily he isn't a guy they depend on. Kane Davis could be interesting in the bullpen. a 26 yr old with mid 90's stuff. He has played for 5 teams, but he used to be a starter, so maybe he's found a niche. | ||||

Jeff D'Amico got taken out after 4 pitches after hurting his flexor muscle in his wrist. This is NOT GOOD at all! This guy has the goods but hes always fucking injured. Hopefully its not too bad, but right now this is not what the Mets need going into the last weeks of spring training. He'll be at AAA I believe, and is probably the catcher of the future whenever Piazza moves. Seo looks like he's still improving after arm surgery - Piazza mentioned that he was really impressed by his stuff. I think this will be last year in Pt. St. Lucie. Mets want to be on East Coast where they can draw better, and PSL wants a long term commitment. Ideal situation seems to be Jupiter if Expos fold; Loria wants to move the marlins there, but there is dispute over whose choice it would be, and Jupiter supposedly would prefer Mets. Final note: Watched and heard games over the weekend; even though the games didn't mean anything, It brightens the day to hear or watch baseball - kinda means spring is here. | ||||

Yesterday's game is what it seems we may be seeing. 6-4 victory, Vaughn, Piazza, Cedeno homers; Ordonez spiffy plays on d, pitching OK (Estes started strong, but has that one inning where it starts to get away). Spring is time for Optimism, and I see no reason yet to worry (Leiter & D'Amico injuries seem minor enough). | ||||

Every year with tix they include Media guide (where they got all of that "cool" info, like what the Mets record is for runs scored in the 16th inning), as well as some token collectable. They already sent video of the 9/21/01 game - 1st back after 9-11, and now they included a Mike Piazza uniform pencil holder - real cool ;) | ||||

The only real contact I had with and of the players was with Jay Payton and Jorge Velandia. My brother and I were having some beverages at the PSL Draft House when I noticed Jay sitting a couple of seats down the bar. We introduced ourselves and he was totally cool and nice to us. Got some pics with him and he says he feels as healthy as ever. Velandia's first name is JORGE not pronounced GEORGE like Howie Rose and Fran Healy say sometimes. 2. Burnitz is not as tall as I thought. Really, only and inch or two taller than Joe McEwing. Jorge Toca is a big motherfucker. Quads like a tree trunk. Ordonez put on serious muscle and hit three homeruns (no shit) during batting practice. 3. We went to the stadium the first day and the groundskeeper let us walk on the field and in the dugout. There was a ball on the ground so I took it as my only souvenior. 4. Florida is so fucking hot. How is Mo Vaughn not dead yet? Lots of hot chicks and NASCAR shit. Nothing to do in town without driving to West Palm or Daytona. Nothing like Jersey though baby! Great time. Any Met fan must take the trip sometime. It was freezing here, so FU :) I hope Payton has his breakout year. It would be nice to have a home grown talent for a change. Mets came close (allegedly) to dealing him in a package with Chen for Gabe Kapler, and a reliever (Vizcaino), but money difference seemed to help keep Payton here. | ||||

It would be a terrible deal, Payton had a solid rookie season, but like everyone else last year his numbers dropped. The Mets need to have more patience in their homegrown talent. I think this is a big year though for Payton, a 'rubber year' to see what kind of player he really is, 2000 or 2001 version.
