SAN DIEGO -- Don't worry, Mark McGwire, your home run record is safe. Sincere or not, Barry Bonds said Wednesday that he does not believe he can catch Big Mac.

"Not a chance," Bonds told San Francisco Chronicle reporter Henry Schulman before hitting No. 38 in the Giants' 8-6 victory over the Padres.

Bonds is well ahead of McGwire's 1998 record-setting pace when he finished the season with 70 home runs.

The two sluggers will get a chance to see each other up close this weekend when the Giants play a series at St. Louis. Bonds and McGwire have combined for 1,092 career homers.

With his homer Wednesday night, Bonds set a record for most homers by the All-Star break -- and the All-Star Game is not until July 10. Bonds is on pace to hit 87 this season, yet told the Chronicle that he doesn't believe he will keep up the necessary pace to pass Big Mac.

"Mark is so much stronger than I am," Bonds said. "The difference is, even when Mark is tired the ball goes 520 feet. When I'm tired, or a normal guy is tired, it goes 230 feet. Mark hits the ball out of the park and we hit it to the shortstop.

"If someone was as big and strong as he was, I'd probably say that person has a chance. Mark can miss a ball and hit a home run. We can't miss a ball and hit a home run."

here it is. if he stays healthy and consistent, he won't break it, he'll crush it. he's on pace for 87. but things can happen, injury, slumps, being pitched around. we gotta wait and see where he's at in mid august.

Ok.... where the hell is Robert DeNiro when you need him? I would like to see just about anybody but Bonds break the record.

While there is no doubting that Bonds is an excellent player, he simply is not the kind of guy you want to gain "Sports Hero" status. He has no concern for his teammates, and he could care less about the fans. He is a prima donna and a clubhouse cancer.

All that being said, his late season choke just doesn't seem to be coming this year and it looks like he will do it. :(

Wow, nice reference.

I hope Bonds does it. The Pirates were my favorite team growing up, eventhough everyone hates the guy I've always liked him becuase he was always head and shoulders above everyone else (well except for October)

So let's cover this topic also first.

So Bonds his 71 homers, everyone says hooray, congrats and moves on. How long before Jesse Jackson complains that people must be racist becuase they aren't giving Bonds the press that McGwire broke the record?
