Two theories. One: Before Calima crashed the planet was really the PLANET OF THE HORSIES!! Either that or Calima had horses on it.
Interesting little side note: I wait until the end of the credits and one of the stunt guys' name was Greg Anthony.

| great movie and great acting by everyone in it. tim roth is my brand new hero. he stole that movie and helena bonham carter was pretty good too. i think estella warren was in the movie because she looks the way she does because she added nothing to the movie, but t&a. what i mean is it could have been the same movie without her in it.
the ending was confusing as hell to me and my gf and i thought i was stupid for not being able to figure it out. now i see that maybe its up to interpretation. everyone has their own theory about how things worked out and maybe thats what burton had in mind. this will be talked about for a while and maybe thats what he wanted. buzz around a movie is never a bad thing. how many people now are going to go see the movie again just so they can see where mark w. came back in time at the end. should be interesting to see the rest of the theories that will come out about the ending when everyone sees the movie.
on a personal note, did anyone else think of anthony and his sig pic whenever thade came on the screen????????:):):)

| A couple of other theories...
1: The Oberon.. in searching for Wahlberg.. passes through the cloud and jumps WAY into the pst (this is a given, it actually happened) BUT.. BEFORE their systems give out and they crash.. they ACTUALLY end up near a prehistoric earth, and thus crash there.. (or the storm deposits them there) Thus when Wahlberg lands he is actually on Earth allready.. when he *jumps* back to the future and sets his coordinates to Earth he actually ends up on the dsame planet.. where Thade had eventually escaped and continued his plot to exterminate humans, successfully.
OR
2: Remember Thade is locked in the CONTROL ROOM for a large space station.. who's to say the control room doesn't pull a Star Trek Suacer section manuever.. OR there aren't escape pods? Thade eventually activates such (he was able to figure out a gun.. why not other tech?) And follows wahlberg.. only the cloud doesn't send him quite as far forward as it did Wahlberg.. he liberates all of earths apes (ala one of the other POTA movies) and takes over earth.. in comes wahlberg and Thade is prepared to wreak his vengeance (I do believe the old general DID say Thad would NEVER give up pursuit, did he not?) THUS the very 20th century monuments we see at the end.. PLUS the producers can keep the main characters (Thade brought along hostages when he came in the hopes of drawing the space man into a conflict)
Just some thoughts on the subject.
No! I am NOT a Goth Dude!!

| My theory is is that the whole ending was a dream of Marky Mark's. Here is my reasoning.
Most of these theories you guys have come up with are so complex and far fetched. I think The simplest answer and least complex is most likely the most logical one.
Just think about what you saw in the ending. There were regular cars, there was still a Lincoln Memorial, a reflection pool, reporters, Cops, helicopters. Everything was was identical to today. The only difference was that the Apes replaced the humans. There is no way that everything could be identical, even if Thade made it back in time.
The bestway to explain the ending is that Marky Mark dreamed it all when he went through the cloud and crash landed into the Lincoln memorial. He crashlanded into solid concrete and even though he was protected by the ship, he had to have been affected some way by the sudden impact. A perfect example is I know what you did Last Summer, where she dreamed the ending of her being attacked and you don't know that until the sequel. I feel it is one of those Sixth Sense endings, where how did I not see that coming.

The ending took some thinking, but i relised it about 1:30AM last night/this morning, and i must say tim burton is a film making genious.

| "It was all a dream" is possibly the worst way to end it. That's always a cheap way out- even cheaper and less creative than alternate universe. And anytime you're looking towards IKWYDLS for movie hints is a sad day, no offense.

| if you remeber at the begining of the movie, when the big ship first encounters the cloud, someone in the backround says "all the digital clocks are going haywire". thus, when markey mark goes through the cloud, his clock says he went into the future, when in actuallity, he went into the past. when the big ship went to find him, the cloud sent it further back in time, thus why it was thousands of years older, once that happened, that changed the future. so when markey mark goes back to the present, he comes home to what the ape civilazation has evolved to.
You Never Know.

| Yes I agree that would be a copout ending, but it as much an explanation as a parallel universe would be (which I kind of agree with as well). I was just thinking in really simplistic terms and it has been done before. Think about it, how many movies and or tv shows give a copout or sucky ending. This is definitely an ending that will have people talking about a sequel, to find out exactly what did happen.

| Uni, intersting theories but it still does not explain how everything is identical to present day earth and they still have water in front of the Lincoln Memorial and all Apes are deathly afraid of water.

| Well we don't know for sure if the Apes are hostile towards humans. Sure all we see are Apes aiming guns at Whalberg BUT that's understandable as he's a visitor from space. Maybe it's a world where apes and humans co-exist peacefully. That's another theory. That or Thade and a bunch of cronies zap back in time to like the 1970s, 1980s after everything is built, destroys all the humans and knocks the head off of Lincoln Memorial creating a Thade head in its place.
EDIT: Another thing to remember, when Calima is looking at the transmissions coming into the ship they get a glimpse of one of the crew members saying "Mayday, Mayday"

| No shit Unicron, I think you got a good one there. That would make sense since the first time he went through the electrical storm the year went into 2229. And then, they said the ship has been there for thousands of years.
Bottom line; I think we have a better chance guessing WNEW line up six months from now then figuring out the end to The Planet of the Apes.

Straw, Froy wrote that, and its supposed to say Emtertainment.
As for Planet:

I don't think any of this kinda talk holds up due to the fact that a point was made to show us 3 planets almost lined up when Marky Mark landed on the POTA and a nice green, blue, and white planet when he lands on Earth. There is no way the planet the Apes are on was Earth in any century. I believe it had rings for one. And if it didn't, then the planet right next to it did.
EDIT ~ The idea of a dream ending- if that's what happens, then it probably came from a script for the sequel not testing well so they had to come up with something different but needed to fit it into the ending of the first one. I don't think they'd write it that way intentionally.

| Here are my thoughts:
First, I think it's hysterical that everyone still
calls Mark Wahlberg Marky Mark. I don't think
he'll ever live that name down!
Lord Magus, IKEA, and Unicorn, you guys
came up w/ some great theories on the
ending. The great thing about this movie is
that it lets people use their imaginations and
interpret the ending in many ways. It's been a
while since there was a good sci fi flick that
really captured people's attention and made
them think. After hearing all these theories,
I'm going to go see the movie again and
REALLY pay attention.

That's another thing that sort of bothered me. We definitely saw him travel by a Saturn looking planet which is hundreds if not thousands of light years away and then quickly ending of near "Earth." There is no way that pod can go faster than the speed of light.

| Ok heres what I got from the movie:
1) There is no way Thade could have taken the ship ANYWHERE!!! The fuel was depleated after Marky-Mark's ape-frying stunt.
2) There is no logical explination why an "Ape Earth" would be similar to a "Human Earth" unless they took over the Human Earth
3) The Apes were tokin'
4) The first planet Marky-Mark landed on was somewhere near Saturn, and at the end he goes back to earth (you actually see him pass planets)
5) The ending was the only part in the whole F'n movie that didn't make logical sense
All in all i liked the action (although there could have been more) and the make-up was amazing. But it was a bit of a let down.
