O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Some reasons I can think of: 1)Lack of offense. People like scoring. 2)Cannot touch the ball with your hands. 3)Actual time is kept by referee not the clock so you have no idea when it's over. 4)No high profile stars 5)Unless you are playing, very boring sport to watch just watching people kick the ball constantly.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Apr. 02 | TW, Thanks for your response. All of your points are valid from your perspective but I see it differently. I play soccer in a league in Northern VA. I played football, baseball, and soccer in high school. I played soccer in college and in Germany while in the Army. I have a different opinion because I look at the game differently than you do. I continue to hope that as the US in able to better compete with the rest of the world people will enjoy the game more. Semper Liberi

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | quote: I agree with your other points, but "no high profile stars" is a catch-22; the reason there are no "high profile stars" is that soccer isn't popular here. Around the world, soccer stars are more recognizable than movie stars. quote: Point 5 gets down to the nitty gritty. This is common to most things. Baseball is popular because most males in the US played baseball at some time in their life. Auto racing is popular because most people have driven cars. This isn't the only reason, but a big reason. Why do Americans like baseball? If you've tried to hit a baseball, you appreciate how difficult it is. To the rest of the world soccer is like baseball here - kids play it after school, fathers & sons talk about the game, they study nuances that we don't pick up, etc. 2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....) 1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice 1a. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | mikehern, I don't think american's characterize it as a woman's sport (although they did try to capitalize on woman's soccer after the Woman's olympic soccer win) but I think that most 2nd generation (or later) american adults haven't really played it. On long Island, kids soccer is pretty big, but when I lived in NYC I don't even remember my HS having a varsity team. My son plays both Little League Baseball, and intramural soccer, but if there are conflicts most americans keep with baseball. Most of the coaches in kids soccer don't have a clue about the nuances of the game, so they can't pass it on. By the way, American coach Bruce Arena only became a soccer coach out of luck. quote: for the rest of the article Lacrosse Opened Door for Arena's World Cup Career 2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....) 1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice 1a. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I have to say, ive changed my mind about this game of futbol. This game today was amazing, the US made a tremendous showing for themselves, and were inches away a number of times from scoring a goal. Soccer in general i always thought was boring, i dont know if ill go out of my way to watch it now, but it aint so boring...when played at this skill level. The field doesnt seem so big in this setting, and im starting to appreciate the skill and strategy it takes to play this game. However, im not sure if ill watch MLS style soccer now. The skill level just isnt that good compared to this. Thats like telling me, I am guaranteed to watch a few high quality major league baseball games every 4 years, but in the meantime, i have to watch 4 years worth of AA baseball. Im just not gonna do it, and thats why soccer may not get as popular here anytime soon. Because there isnt enough talent to have a major league level soccer league for 4 years straight before the world cup. Thats just my view on it. Thanks to Austin for the pic 1. 94 Wins and NL East Title by the Mets this year 2. Hate the Braves with a passion 3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year 4. Mets win World Series 5. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | quote: No. CF mentioned some of the reasons. The reason there isn't as much talent is that the most talented players are going to other sports. In the past even some of the best american soccer players would rather kick for the NFL than play MLS. Back in the 70's the Cosmos had some juice - they brought in Pele, Chinaglia(sp?), Beckenbaur(?), etc and played in Giants Stadium, but it was never even bigger than Hockey. Hockey is probably the best comparison, and that has some deep roots in some northern states (Minn, the Dakotas, Mass, VT, CT, Maine, etc.) Hockey also has the advantage that the NHL is the best hockey league; great american players will play in Europe. 2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....) 1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice 1a. Psychopath Registered: Mar. 02 | I don't see the lack of talent in the US as a major hindrance to the sport of soccer. I love to watch the Premier League games when they're on Fox Sports. Granted, it'd mean more if I was directly involved in the rivalries, but I think true soccer fans are/would be willing to watch the greats play elsewhere. One major hindrance I see is advertising. Without commercial breaks every five minutes, networks are reluctant to carry games. I mean really, how much does Nike pay to have that little logo in the corner of the screen for an MLS game? How much do they even pay for that during the World Cup final match? It can't be all that much. AIM | E-mail
