I think Ikea touched on this but I have to point something else out about it. After Marky Mark takes off in the pod the crew of the Oberon get a Mayday message. Before this someone on the ship says that they are picking up all video throughout the United States' history (Hitler, man on the moon, etc). Towards the end of the movie when Wahlberg is checking the video log the same mayday message pops up. I don't know exactly what it could mean, but I think that it is something that was left unexplained.

Also, if Thade did go back in time and take over the earth it was probably to around the 20th or 21st century when the Earth was already industrialized. The Lincoln Memorial is the same except for the face. Wouldn't apes have built it with an ape-like body?

BTW, what are the odds of Marky Mark landing in the US and more specifically Washington DC out of all the other places on earth? Did he program his pod to land there or are we supposed to believe that he happened to land there?

EDIT: How could Thade get out of the ship? A hand print is needed to open the door and the only person from the Oberon still alive was Marky Mark?

OK, new theory. The ending was put there to make you go "Gee whiz, that was almost like the original endinding with the Statue of Liberty" , nothing more. It wasn't supposed to make sense or be logical or anything else. Therefore whatever explanation you want to believe is correct because none was inteneded.

I saw it a few nights ago...i didn't think all that much of it. the effects were great (as has been said over and over) but the plot seriously didn't match up. i agree with brownstone, it was just done to parallel the first movie at the end, without a logical explanation for it. out of ten i'd give it about a five, mostly for the effects.

I heard that someone who was working on the movie said that that is exactly what was intended.

Ok, I just saw this movie tonight and thought it was pretty good, good special effects, good acting. I'll see it again, but when it comes out on DVD.

As for the ending, the explanation that both Ant and the timeline (here: http://hazmat.4t.com/html/pota_timeline.html )said doesn't really make sense. It says that, one way or another, Marky Mark leaves the planet and goes back in time to Earth, around his home time. It also says that Thade has somehow found a way to also travel back in time, farther back than Marky Mark, and has made the changes that result in the Earth Marky Mark sees. Ant used a comparison to Back to the Future 2 (which I WHOLEHEARTEDLY approve of). This situation though, creates a paradox. If Thade altered Earth, that would mean that Marky Mark and his whole funky bunch either wouldn't be born, or at least never go on the expedition to space, meaning they would never crash land on the PotA. This means not only that Thade would have no means to travel back to Earth, but it would mean Thade wouldn't even exist since the Oberon crashing on the PotA is what ultimately caused him to exist. But since Thade doesn't exist, he never takes over Earth, meaning Marky Mark and his funky bunch DO go on the expedition, meaning they crash on the PotA and Thade DOES exist and he goes back and enslaves Earth, etc etc etc. It's a Paradox.

Of course, the sequel could explain how Marky Mark goes back in time and stops Thade from enslaving Earth, thus then avoiding the paradox, but we'll just have to wait and see......

And the virus continues to spread....

Does anyone know if O&A talked about this on-air yet? Or if they said how long they would give for people to see the movie before they'd discuss it on-air?

Sorry to bring this back up to the top. I DLed it the other day. All in all, i thought it was a good movie. Below is a Vidcap i took of the time-reading mechanism before it went off-screen. I dont really want to over analyze the movie, so you people can draw you're own conclusions.

Burton says no sequel--

Planet of the Apes" director rules out sequel
Reuters
Aug 17 2001 3:36AM

LONDON (Reuters) - "Planet of the Apes" director Tim Burton is adamant there will be no sequel to the blockbuster movie.
"The idea of doing a sequel -- I'd rather jump out of the window, I swear to God," Burton told Britain's Independent newspaper in an interview published Friday.

Hollywood's so-called "King of the Weird," whose previous quirky triumphs have ranged from "Batman" to "Edward Scissorhands," took a swipe at studio bosses.

"They give you a script, and you do a budget based on that, and say 'This movie would cost $300 million to make', and then they treat you like a crazy, overspending, crazy-person. It's like, 'Well, you gave me the script'," Burton said.

"I'm fascinated by the studio technique that sort of leaves you bloodied, beaten and left for dead right before you're supposed to go out and make a great movie for them."

Burton said the only time anyone listened in Hollywood was when "you go ballistic and psychotic."

"Planet of the Apes" has grossed more than $200 million worldwide. Burton has billed it as a "re-imagination" of the 1968 sci-fi classic, which spawned four sequels.

Do to the fact that the video/DVD comes out tomorrow, is anyone getting it? If so, maybe they can just watch that ending a few times and try to see anything that would explain what the fuck happened.

Read the original book, it makes some sense of the ending of the new POTA movie.
