Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | I guess all there is left to do is speculate on who is coming and going. Here are some rumors going around. 7/1 ESPN baseball analyst Dave Campbell spelled out a scenario on Baseball Tonight where the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners could each really use lefthander Al Leiter for their respective pennant races. GM Steve Phillips says he's not inclined to gut his team in a fire sale, which of course is the right thing to say in this situation. No sense in hanging a "everyone must go!" bargain basement sign on a club -- that doesn't translate into getting back quality players. As Campbell says, the Mariners are having a magical season and Leiter would be a piece that could get everyone in Seattle a World Series ring. "Empty the farm to get (Leiter)," Campbell suggests. As for Cleveland, Campbell feels time is wearing thin to make a run at a title. "This may be their last year to do something and again, Leiter is just what they need," he stated. It should be interesting to see how things play out should the Mets indeed decide to rebuild; a pitcher like Leiter could bring back two or three quality prospects. 7/1 With outfielder Darryl Hamilton having been designated for assignment, the Mets are looking into dealing him to the Baltimore Orioles for their disgruntled outfielder, Delino DeShields, according to The Newark Star-Ledger. The Mets are eating the remaining half of Hamilton's $3.1 million contract, and want something to show for it. The Daily News reports the Mets have also contacted the Seattle Mariners about a swap for Al Martin. O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | If they can get a bag of Nachos for Darryl Hamitlon it would be well worth it. Asking for Cheez Wiz or Salsa might be overdoing it, because I doubt Baltimore or whoever would do it then, they would be giving up too much. | ||||

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | More Speculation.... 7/2 There has been a quiet murmur of talk around Shea Stadium about Kansas City Royals outfielder Jermaine Dye, who is arbitration eligible after this season and had an off year through the first half. One rumored trade proposal has the Mets sending Benny Agbayani, Glendon Rusch and Rick White to Kansas City for the 27-year-old Dye, who is a Gold Glove-winning defensive outfielder and has hit for good power and average over the last two seasons, driving in over 100 runs. Peter Gammons says otherwise, saying that Alex Escobar and Rusch get the deal done. Giving up an outfielder would be fine to get Dye but if we give up Rusch for just about anything I will be pissed. He is a young lefty with good movement. He is one player that we really should do alot to keep. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Holy shit he finnally won agame Benitez 17-for-17 in save situations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG NEW YORK (AP) -- Glendon Rusch pitched seven sharp innings and added an RBI to get his first win in more than six weeks as the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 Wednesday. The Mets once again failed to come up with any clutch hits, but they didn't need to as they manufactured their runs. New York, the lowest-scoring team in the majors, is 2-for-53 with runners in scoring position the past six games and has scored two or fewer runs in 34 of 85 games. But Rusch's pitching gave the Mets just their fifth win in those games. He retired 16 straight batters between Robert Machado's RBI double in the second and Gary Matthews Jr.'s two-out infield single in the seventh. Rusch (4-5) gave up one run, five hits and one walk, striking out four -- including Sammy Sosa twice. The subject of recent trade talks, Rusch had been 0-2 in seven starts since beating Montreal on May 21. John Franco pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and Armando Benitez -- bypassed by manager Bobby Valentine for the All-Star game -- got three straight outs for his 17th save in as many chances. Kevin Tapani (8-6) pitched well but had nothing to show for it, losing his fifth straight start. Tapani allowed two runs and eight hits in seven innings. The Mets played small ball to score single runs in the first two innings. Joe McEwing led off the first with a single and went to third on Edgardo Alfonzo's hit-and-run single with one out. Robin Ventura followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. After the Cubs tied it in the top of the second, Jay Payton singled with one out in the bottom half. He advanced to third on Vance Wilson's first career hit, a double down the left-field line. Valentine called for a squeeze bunt on the next pitch, and Rusch did a good job to get his bat on the ball and pushed it past Tapani for a run-scoring sacrifice. The Cubs had a chance for more runs in their half of the second, but Tapani's bunting skills weren't up to par with Rusch's. With runners on second and third and one out, Tapani popped up a bunt on a safety squeeze. Rusch got Eric Young to fly out to end the threat and didn't allow another hit until the seventh. Game notes The Cubs have scored only 30 runs in their past 12 games. ... Cubs rookie Corey Patterson made a diving catch down the left-field line to rob Alfonzo of a hit in the fifth inning. ... Wilson, 28, went 2-for-3 in his first career start. He entered the game 0-for-5 in his career. ... The Cubs hold a 315-314 edge over the Mets. ... McEwing is 12-for-30 during a seven-game hitting streak. SIG PIC CREATED BY Jolene78 E-Mail Me METS will go ALL THE WAY THIS YEAR !!!!!!!!!!! Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Thought you guys might like to see some of Phillips Midseason Trades courtesy Metsonline.net Steve Phillips' Midseason Trades 8-8-97: OF Lance Johnson, P Mark Clark & IF Manny Alexander to Chicago for OF Brian McRae, P Mel Rojas & P Turk Wendell. Not as bad as you'd thought when it went down. Wendell's been great with the Mets, and Johnson's career was over as he was ailed with shin splints. Rojas was awful for New York, but at least Phillips turned him into Bobby Bonilla. Oops. 5-22-98: OF Preston Wilson, P Ed Yarnall and P Geoff Goetz to Florida for C Mike Piazza. A no-brainer. Wilson's a budding superstar, but Piazza's the reason the Mets have re-emerged in recent years. Credit Nelson Doubleday for pushing for this one; without him, Todd Hundley might still be catching here. 6-4-98: P Dave Mlicki & P Greg McMichael to Los Angeles for P Hideo Nomo and P Brad Clontz. Average deal. Nomo didn't really do much here, but neither did Mlicki (save for the '97 game at Yankee Stadium). Clontzy, we hardly knew ye, but thanks for uncorking that wild pitch in October '99 with Pittsburgh. 7-3-98: P John Hudek to Cincinnati for IF/OF Lenny Harris. Hudek performed terribly for New York, and Harris was/is one of the better pinch-hitters in the game, so what can you say? The bad part was, Phillips had dealt Carl Everett to Houston for Hudek in the first place. 7-10-98: P Brian Bohanon to Los Angeles for P Greg McMichael. How does Bohanon keep winning games? The man's built like a Mack truck. The return of McMuffin didn't do much for the Mets. 7-31-98: OF Bernard Gilkey, P Nelson Figueroa & cash to Arizona for P Willie Blair and C Jorge Fabregas. The Mets badly needed to get rid of Gilkey, and took a chance with these two guys. Figueroa's making it to The Show now with Philly. 7-31-98: P Leo Estrella to Toronto for OF Tony Phillips. All but forgotten; yup, Phillips was the leadoff hitter down that playoff run, in a last hurrah. Estrella's back in the Mets organization now. 7-31-98: P Bill Pulsipher to Milwaukee for IF Mike Kinkade. Great deal -- at least it would have been, if Kinkade had a chance with the Mets. The guy's got power... but a glove like a brick. Ask the fans in Norfolk. 8-10-98: Cash to Kansas City for OF Jermaine Allensworth. Nothing to lose here... when was the last time a dollar bill drove in a runner from second base? But Allensworth didn't do much of that either; last I'd heard, he's in Japan now. 6-18-99: P Allen Watson and cash to Seattle for P Mac Suzuki. Suzuki never made it into a game with the Mets; he was nabbed off waivers by Kansas City days later. Add Watson to the list of guys who have taken potshots at Bobby Valentine. 7-23-99: OF Terrence Long and P Leo Vazquez to Oakland for P Kenny Rogers. Rogers gets a bad rap because of the walk in Game 6 of the NLCS. Without him winning games down the stretch, the Mets don't make the playoffs. Long's got All-Star quality. 7-31-99: OF Brian McRae, P Rigo Beltran and OF Thomas Johnson to Colorado for OF Darryl Hamilton & P Chuck McElroy. The Mets got some mileage out of Hamilton... meanwhile, McRae wound up doing color commentary on ESPN and starring in "Damn Yankees" commercials. 7-31-99: P Greg McMichael & P Jason Isringhausen to Oakland for P Billy Taylor. Ugh. 75-year-old Billy Goat Taylor for Izzy. While Taylor's sipping ice tea in a retirement community somewhere, Isringhausen is nailing down saves for the A's. 7-31-99: IF/OF Craig Paquette to St. Louis for OF/IF Shawon Dunston. Dunston was a solid performer down that stretch, and his at-bat in Game 5 of the NLCS was legendary. Even he was surprised when the Mets didn't offer a contract. 9-14-99: P Dan Murray to Kansas City for P Glendon Rusch. Looked a lot better before the 2001 season began, but still one of Phillips' better moves. Whatever became of Dan Murray? 6-2-00: P Bill Pulsipher to Arizona for OF/IF Lenny Harris. Pulsipher was absolutely horrendous for the Mets in his second time around; hard to imagine getting better value than Harris. 7-28-00: IF Mike Kinkade, OF/IF Melvin Mora, P Lesli Brea & P Pat Gorman to Baltimore for IF Mike Bordick. Bordick didn't duplicate his first half All-Star numbers, but this was a trade that the Mets had to make. Brea and Gorman could make a splash in the majors in years to come. 7-28-00: P Paul Wilson & OF Jason Tyner to Tampa Bay for P Rick White and OF Bubba Trammell. A good deal; White and Trammell were instrumental in the playoff run. Dealing Trammell for Donne Wall is another story. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | where the hell has trachel been all season ????? he wins yet again i can't believe it.... WOW Trachsel strikes out season-high eight -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG NEW YORK (AP) -- Steve Trachsel struck out a season-high eight in seven innings of his latest strong start since a minor league demotion, leading the New York Mets to a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night. Todd Zeile hit a two-run single in the first inning of Allen Levrault (5-7) and Edgardo Alfonzo added a solo homer in the fifth. The Mets handed the Brewers their seventh straight road loss. Trachsel (6-10) allowed two runs and three hits to win his fourth straight decision. He also helped himself with a well-executed suicide squeeze. Trachsel has simplified his approach since being sent to the minors with a 1-6 record and 8.24 ERA on May 18. He has abandoned his slider and concentrated on his other four pitches since returning three weeks later. The change has been remarkable, especially of late. He is 5-1 with a 2.51 ERA his past seven starts, lowering his ERA to a season-low 4.98. Armando Benitez allowed solo homers to Richie Sexson and Mark Sweeney to open the ninth. Benitez gave up a two-out double to Luis Lopez and a walk before getting Mark Loretta on a fly ball for his 27th save in 29 chances. The Brewers (47-64) lost for the 30th time in 39 games to drop a season-worst 17 games below .500. Robin Ventura keyed the Mets' two-run sixth inning with a hard slide. Mike Piazza and Ventura led off with singles. With a 3-2 count to Zeile, Ventura broke from first, while Piazza held at second. Fortunately for the Mets, Zeile hit a grounder to shortstop Jose Hernandez, who flipped to second baseman Ron Belliard for the force. Ventura knocked Belliard over with a hard, takeout slide to break up a potential double play. Belliard left the game with a sprained right ankle, Loretta came in to play third and Lopez shifted to second. After a wild pitch and an intentional walk, Rey Ordonez hit a hard grounder that Loretta misplayed for a run-scoring error to make it 4-2. The Mets added a fifth run on Trachsel's bunt. New York took advantage of Levrault's wildness to take a 2-0 lead in the first. The right-hander loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman before Zeile's two-out single to left. Raul Casanova hit a solo homer in the second, his 11th, and the Brewers tied the game in the fourth when Jeromy Burnitz scored on Trachsel's wild pitch. Alfonzo broke the tie with his 12th homer, coming with two outs in the fifth. Game notes A black cat ran across the outfield in the seventh inning, drawing cheers from the crowd. ... Sexson is the fifth fastest active player to reach 100 homers, doing it in his 443rd game. Mark McGwire was the fastest, doing it in 393. ... New York is 22-8 all-time against Milwaukee. ... O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Carter emotional at induction By Kevin T. Czerwinski mets.com NEW YORK - The raindrops helped hide the tears a little. It would have taken an ocean, though, to wash away the emotions Gary Carter wore on his sleeve Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Carter was inducted into the Mets' Hall of Fame on Sunday, taking his place alongside the likes of Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman and Cleon Jones, as well as Keith Hernandez and Mookie Wilson, two of his teammates during his tenure in New York. While Carter was only with the Mets for five seasons (1985-89), there's no mistaking the impact "The Kid" made on the team as well as New York City. The fans remembered just how important Carter was to the Mets, offering him heartfelt thanks as they sat through a 20-minute, drizzle-soaked ceremony. No. 8 said before hand that he didn't want to get too emotional, but knew that it was impossible to hold it all inside. And when a video of his Met highlights came on the big video screen in left field, Carter became all choked up. "Did I have a lot of huge numbers in a Met uniform?" Carter asked. "Probably not. But I had clutch hits and that was representative of bringing excitement into this stadium and this city." He came to New York from Montreal in December of 1984 and immediately changed the complexion of the team. As good as the Mets were in 1984, they lacked a presence behind the plate. Carter gave them presence, providing the perfect compliment in a lineup that already featured Keith Hernandez and Darryl Strawberry. "When I started out, I thought Montreal was a beautiful city," said Carter, who had played 10 seasons in Montreal. "But there was something different about it when I came here to New York. It's the media Mecca of the world. I looked forward to the challenge. "This was a very special club that had the opportunity to win. I was the so-called last piece to the puzzle. I had the opportunity to catch one of the greatest pitching staffs in baseball here. I felt fortunate for that. I spent 10 great years in Montreal, but coming to New York was the icing on the cake. Maybe I got some exposure I didn't get in Montreal but a lot of people didn't know who Gary Carter was." If they didn't know who Carter was, they found out quickly. Often overshadowed as a backstop, first by Johnny Bench and then by Carlton Fisk, Carter immediately went to work transforming the Mets. He belted the game-winning homer in his first game at Shea Stadium in 1985, the year he smacked career-high 32 round-trippers and drove in 100 runs. The next season he tied what was then the club record with 105 RBIs and helped make the Mets the most dominating team in baseball. "He seemed like he was different," said Mets Manager Bobby Valentine, who was a coach with New York in 1985. "He gave us a little better image of ourselves, that's for sure." The Mets finished first twice and second three times during Carter's stint in Queens, winning it all in '86 and taking the East in '88. Through it all, he never stopped being "The Kid," playing the role of ebullient leader. He smiled, he laughed; he simply enjoyed being a baseball player. That enthusiasm bubbled over in almost everything Carter did. It's still that way today. It's been nearly 30 years since Mike Torrez, his teammate in Montreal, dubbed him "The Kid." At 47, he's still "The Kid." Now, however, he's just the oldest "Kid" around. A little older, a little less hair and a few more wrinkles, but a "Kid" nonetheless. Carter is in the Expos' Hall of Fame as well. He's in nine Halls of Fame by his count but is still waiting for the call from "The Hall." Carter came close to getting into Cooperstown this year. He received 65 percent of the vote but still fell 53 votes shy. There are few who doubt that Carter, an 11-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner, will gain enough votes when the next group of inductees is announced. The bigger debate seems to center around which hat he will wear, Montreal's or New York's. "No one knows where the Expos will be or if they will even be around anymore," Carter said. "I would be the first person to go in as an Expo. The hat shouldn't mean anything, though. Maybe it should just be a generic hat like Catfish Hunter."
