In fact the last several times that we have launched strikes against Iraq, they have gone so far as to denounce our efforts. Part of it stems from the fact that we haven't paid our UN dues in years, but there's deeper political & personal issues to it. The only good thing that ever came out of France was the Statue of Liberty (we traded that for Jerry Lewis right?) But the funny thing is the war drove up their debt so much that it was a big part in why the French Revolution happened. Funny thing how a guy that was aganist the death penalty(Robespierre) ends up killing all his opponents. Then they end up with a King which is the whole reason they had the revolution. As a brief example, the majority of soldiers at the battle of Yorktown (that caused Cornwallis' surrender I believe) were French. And as for the XYZ affair, that has a lot to do with post-Revolutionary politics. One side was Pro-British and Anti-French, the other vice versa. That kind of caused that conflict. And yes, the French have bowed out of the last two major wars quite soon after commencement. I will say, in their defense, that both of those two world wars the main enemy was Germany. And what nation is right next to Germany, and received the brunt of a German attack at the outset? France.
