O&A Board Regular Registered: Feb. 01 | Get this, after 3 waves of layoff's, my major telecom company, telcordia technologies, has decided to cut 10% of salaries company wide, except for the high corporate management of course. What a crock of shit. I cant believe it. Ponderous. And then they are looking to cut the work week down to 4 days, and cut salaries an additional 20%, bringing the total up to 30% cut. So if anyone here knows if their company is looking for a desktop engineer, let me know. I am so fucked. Thanks for reading my rant.

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | Looks like you don't have too much of a choice, but it's a little rough out there for desktop engineers right now. If they do chop your work week down to four days, and you stick around just make sure you get a side job in TECHNOLOGY (too many people go work at like JC Penney or something to get the discount instead of trying to hone their tech. skills and get a better job). OH and if they try to reinstate the 10%, just make sure that they don't give you a 10% raise, but rather one that fully restores your old wage: Ex: $100 - 10% = $90 $90 + 10% = $99 Thank you to all the brave volunteers who brought us all together as a country, and thank you to those of you brave soldiers who will fight and have fought for our country. We are a free people because of your efforts.

You could be like me and have 2 college degrees and after getting laid off I am stuck driving a truck for an auto parts store while i try to score a new job. You have to try, as disturbing as it is, to get into management's head and try and figure out what motivates them to do what they do (fear, ass-covering, selfishness, and ego seem to be repeatedly top of the pops). I've just heard too many stories like the one above, you know? Where I work they tried to cut consultant's wages by 15%! What's the point of being a consultant then? But what a lot of the consultants didn't know is that there was likely a secret move underway wherein if they bent over and took it that was great, but if they fought it the company would cave in and either cut them by 10% or not at all. It's just a lot scarier when it's YOUR job on the line and you've got a family to take care of - what then? The employers all have the upper hand and they're using it, just like most of us have been using the employee upper hand the past few years. These things are always cyclical, so we all just have to do our best to make it through these shitty times. Happy days will be back soon enough. Thank you to all the brave volunteers who brought us all together as a country, and thank you to those of you brave soldiers who will fight and have fought for our country. Hanger-On Registered: Aug. 01 | Exactly what is a desktop engineer? Are you talking about software programming on the client side of client/server? Or are you talking about PC helpdesk/setup/troubleshooting? Let me know. We have openings coming up in our company as we phase out all of our consultants.
