I live in brooklyn and now work in the city. Now when i get on the train I get a cup of coffee. Usually the 32 ounce for about 1.09. Then I get to work and I get coffee a 16.oz which then costs 1.75. Now that is not that huge a difference but it adds up. A snapple is 1.75, yet it's a buck in brooklyn and lunch is a bitch as well. This all fuckin adds up during the week, I know the real estate and all that shit is more expensive and such. But I just needed to vent, i am a jew and pennies add up to dollars.

GS, a couple of possible solutions;

Independent wealth. Then someone else can get your coffee and you will never even see the price.

A Barney thermos and lunch box combo. This way you can bring coffee and lunch with you. Not only will this save you pennies, but the Barney combo may attract young boys towards you while your having lunch in the park, saving you money on desert.

Good Luck!

[Crazy Eddie Voice]They're INSANE!!![/Crazy Eddie Voice]

I know what you mean. I brown-bag it at least two or three days a week. A lot cheeper to buy a pound of coldcuts and a loaf of bread.

i too thought that the prices were insane. i mean $100 for one baseball card. but then i was told that the card is really $10,000 in the blue book. so it wasn't that insane as it is.

seriously, i solve this problem by not eating during the day. Occasionally i might have like a muffin or bagel or something but mostly i just drink coffee during the day. And I go to delis for my coffee and get a large for like $1 or so and it tastes better than 'expensive' coffee even though I can't find a 7 11 with the 32 ounce but 20 oz for a dollar is good for what ails you (and when I don't have coffee I actually get in physical pain). Other money saving tips is getting a lunch special from like a chink or Jap place and saving it/pick on it during the day and night.

Movie prices in teh city are also insane, $10 a ticket with NO early matinee. It's fucking ridiculous. On the Island I liked that I could see a new movie for $5.75 by seeing the first showing now even if you see the first showing it's $10. Sometimes I get cheaper passes because of college but still it totally messes you up if you want to see a movie just for the hell of it without planning aheaed of time. If there WAS matinee tickets in new york, i can assure you, right now i'd have seen the Star Wars episode 2 trailer.

My solution :
Buy a programmable coffee maker, set it to brew a cup or two for you in the morning, put in in a thermos, off you go. If your job doesn't already have one, tell them to get a coffee machine, and be sure to stress that it be a FREE machine (thats what we have here). Depending on how much "juice" you have with the suits at your job, you might be able to persuade them into considering it.

As for lunch, the only way to save is to bring your own. I never used to, but once I started to see just how much cash I spent a month on lunch made me start doing it two or three times a week. I work in lower manhattan, so I know all about paying $8.50 for a sandwich and a Snapple - fuckin' crooks.

Oh, I don't make my own coffee because I suck at it so I prefer just to buy on the street and get hot and fresh.

You can always get a grande White Chocolate mocha latte at StarBucks and blow 5 bucks. I still can't get over the fact that I ordered that once. Those bastards sucked me in. They are everywhere. Everywhere you go there's a Starbucks! FUCK THEM!

Starbucks always has and always will blow. It's overpriced and takes poor. And I can NEVER find an actual 'coffee house' but if you just want real coffee do the deli or dunkin' donuts thing. Deli is probbaly chaper though

Never have and never will go to a starbucks. But I am a guy who can drink 4 or 5 large coffees in a day cause caffeine has no effect on me as far as energizing or waking me up. But I am still enjoying my ice coffee right now which cost 2 fuckin dollars.

I dont work in NYC but I think I can relate.. I work in Bedminster NJ and I live in Morris County, New Jersey. Both are kind of pricy, but Bedminster is outrageously overpriced.. It is a very nice town and there are a lot of offices there. It is also has homes of Steve Forbes, and the surrounding towns have homes owned by Mike Tyson, Whitney Houston, Arnold Schwarzenneger, etc.. so in my town that I live, I can spend like a buck for a snapple and 90 cents for a bagel. In the town that I work though, it is like 1.60 for a snapple and 1.25 for a bagel. and yes, it does add up after a while.
