O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | What kind of a PC are you running? It looks like your only problem is the CPU speed. Are you sure you can't up the CPU? And if you definitely can't, I'm sure someone here can recommend you a solid MoBo and CPU combo to buy. It would be a worthy investment, not just for GTA3 but for everything else you're running/will eventually run. Dell said my MoBo couldn't accept a CPU faster than a PII 450 - meanwhile I'm zooming along with a PIII 1 GHz. So don't always believe what the manufacturers tell you (and no, my upgrade was a clean one - I just swapped the CPU's - no adapters or jimmy-rigging involved). You can reach me through AIM or email. Feel free to contact me if you have any board questions, techie (PC) questions, or even if you just wanna say hi.

Psychopath Registered: Apr. 01 | i had checked my mother board specs and it said it only supports up to a p2 350, which i have.. i have had the computer for 4 years. how did you find out that you could use a faster CPU? I have a Quantex (they were good until they filed for Chapter 11). Maybe I will just buy it and try it..

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Normally I reserve such advice for the tech forum, but I think I'll risk it.... I actually found out by hanging out on a Dell-messageboard, and the guys there were really helpful to me as far as information and where to buy the new CPU. Quantex is long gone, so looking to them is of no use - try to find out what kind of a MoBo and CPU type you have - for example, I have an Intel 440BX board and a Slot1-type (cartridge) CPU. If that makes absolutely no sense to you, try going to motherboards.org and poke around there. Being that your machine is 4 years old, it might be better if you just got a new board and a faster CPU along with it - but you have to know which board is a good one, what's a good CPU for you to buy based on how you use the computer, etc. I would recommend a board, but I honestly don't know much about them to do so. That site is a great place to start, and you might be able to up your current CPU for a cheap-but-faster one for the time being just to get you up-to-speed for GTA3, and you can take your time researching a whole new uber-board/CPU combo for down the line. You can reach me through AIM or email. Feel free to contact me if you have any board questions, techie (PC) questions, or even if you just wanna say hi.

Psychopath Registered: Mar. 02 | If you're interested in an Athlon CPU (which I've been seen pushing like dope) I got a lot of information from this site. Ended up getting a Epox 8KHA3 (or something along those lines) and I'm VERY happy with it. I went through a couple of iterations on my latest rebuild, and my biggest recommendation would be to spend the extra $50 to get the better MB. It has a LOT to do with the stability of your system. It wasn't lies, it was just...bullshit.

Hanger-On Registered: Apr. 02 | it's your fault your computer is shit. The reason rockstar deserves a huge FU is for not including muliplayer in gta3 for the pc. That's the only reason I was looking forward to it.

Psychopath Registered: Apr. 01 | Well, i have the specs in front of me.. it says that the slot 1 is for a p2.. and it supports 400MHz processors and faster. Is it safe to put a p4 in a slot built for a p2?? Or should I try to buy a faster p2?

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Well since you have a slot1, you're in somewhat of the same boat I was in. What you need to do is find out what your Front Speed Bus (FSB) speed is. Since it's a Quantex and it shipped w/a PII 350, I will go ahead and assume yours is 100Mhz (but it might be 133 - you gotta check on that). Either way, my MoBo supports up to a 1Ghz Slot1 CPU (It looks like a cartridge). I bought mine at DallasMemory.com for a little over $200 over a year ago, and now it looks to be at $199. Make sure that whatever CPU you get (should you decide to get one) is a RETAIL BOX and not an OEM chip (OEM's come out of spare-parts bins usually from returned or refurbed PC's). Normally I would say go for the OEM as it's cheaper, but when it comes to CPU's I like the idea of a full warranty :). Also, that site isn't the only place to buy from - go to Pricewatch.com and look up your CPU - remember, always look to buy RETAIL!. Your MoBo might be different than mine, esp. since mine was never tested to take CPU speeds @ 1Ghz (someone tried it and found out it worked, then spread the news). Try asking around the motherboard.org forums, or at the very least get the model # of your MoBo so you can at least research the specifics of your MoBo. I use SiSoftSandra2002 - if I can find the install app, I can send it to you to use (unless you have another way to get the MoBo info). I'd be willing to bet you can definitely go up to 1Ghz, but I don't want to tell you to go and get it only to find out that you can't use it. You can reach me through AIM or email. Feel free to contact me if you have any board questions, techie (PC) questions, or even if you just wanna say hi.
