Went to the mall to pick up a couple cds today. The mall had 2 stores to buy cds, Circuit City and Sam Goody. Circuit City, who has really cheap prices, didn't have em or were sold out. So i had to go to Sam Goody. They wanted 18 dollars for the one cd, and 20 f'n dollars for the other. No wonder people burn cds. 20 friggin dollars for one cd, wtf is up w/ that?

FU SAM GOODY.

Damn. 20 bucks for an f'n CD. I haven't bought a cd for a while, maybe I won't buy another one. It only costs the ass f's like 50 cents to make the thing.

I can't stand when people say that, yes CD prices over very high. A cd shouldnt cost more than 10 bucks. But physically it may cost 50 cents but what about the other costs involved? I love when people think everything is a clean profit. As a busniess owner i know differently. If i sell something for 100 bucks doesnt mean a 100 buck goes into my wallet.

what about the costs of making the music?

the studio time, the cost of the electricity while making the music, the costs of packing, printing, shipping, someone writing liner notes, someone designing the cover, the band gets paid, then the stores mke a mark up as well and on and one the costs go. In the end it may caost 4 bucks to make it then the record company sells it to a distributor who then sells it to some place like sam goody for say 7 or 8 bucks plus tax. Then sam goody has to make a profit plus cover their expenses of running a store so they sell cds for 14 or 15 bucks. But hey such is the world of business. the companies and distributors can cut some costs to make cd's cost about 10 bucks but you have to understand their view points as well. They have to make money just like you do. Napster is good but it can't get to the point that no one will buy cd's i mean i don't support what lars and the companies are forcing napster to do. BUt play devils advocate if no one buys cds who will wanna make music for free? there needs to be a compromise.

But using the excuse a cd costs 50 cents doesn't make it right. That's like the excuse pot heads use "hey man weed is natural it grows from the earth god put it here" Ok ass f god also put poison ivy and posinous mushrooms on earth but i don't go play with ivy leaves or eat mushrooms that will kill me. Don't make excuses you just like to get high and that's that. don't rationalize it with some ludicrous excuse.

plus let me make this point boycotting the buying of cd's doesn't only hurt the artist and record companies.

If and this is ofcourse just hypothetical cause this will never happen.

A record company goes out of business do you know how many regular joe's will be out of work?

don't forget how many people work for these companies. Like any factory they need people who unfortunatly are not lucky enough to have an education for a better job. Maybe their parents couldnt afford school or whatever.

think of the people who package, press. stack, and box the cd's the thousands of people who haul them, drive them and deliver them. Down to the custodian who celans the factory thousands upon tounsands depend on these jobs always think of the little people as well.

This is a subject that has many pro's and cons to it. You can debate this forever without an end.

Let's not forget that many cd's today have a lot of computer extra's like custom browsers, extra tracks, and mpeg video's someone has to design them as well.

Gonzo you make points but there one counter-point. A tape costs twice as much to make as a cd but costs half as much. This is why in 28 or so states the record companies are being sued for illegally high prices.

Gonzo, all your points are valid and I agree 100%.

But I still say FU Sam Goody. They charge $18-$20 for the same CDs you can get for $12-$14 at some other stores...

good point but we got back to the physical aspect of the prodeuct. But the overhead costs are the same. someone still has to package the music and it's the same costs that go into a cd. but you add on an extra 50 cents for a tape. But most tapes cost about 12,99 or 11.99 most cd's cost 14.99. I agree that they are overpriced but saying it costs 50 cents or a dollar doesnt mean you gotta sell them for 3 dollars.

A tape costs less cause the demand for audio tapes isnt as high as it is for cd's.

Tapes should be cheaper about 8 bucks and cd's should be 10 bucks.

But i agree sam goody sucks FU to them i go to the wiz of tower.

Sam Goody have higher overhead because of the cost of mall rents. The Musicland Group (owners of Sam Goody) have another chain called Media Play, where prices are more reasonable.

Gonz, you have many points, but with music, cd's as such, yea there is studio time and people to pay and cd costs, but just think of how many cd's they sell, 20 bucks is definatly too much for a cd, i think a reasonable price, and i definatly will not pay more for a cd then like 13.99

I have no problem at all paying a fair amount for a cd. 12-15 dollars. I don't just look to burn them and rip artists off. Its just when certain stores charge an arm and a leg that pisses me off.

Try Disco-rama in the Village (and Union Square). CD's in the top 200 (?) are 10.99

This is the only place I buy my stuff to support the bands. Don't forget, it not only supports your favorite bands, but allows the companies to nurture/support/discover new artists

You know why cd's are so expensive? It's not just to pay the artist and the studio....

approximately 75% of the cost of the cd is used for Advertising/Promotions/Public Relations and to pay all the ass-f's who sit on their asses at the record company

I don't have a credit card which makes it pretty tought to order online. Plus theres the waiting factor and the chance something can happen to it while being shipped.
