O&A Board Regular Registered: Nov. 00 | This ones for all the under 21 board members who can't join us at the bar. Here's why (and this e-mail wasn't the first place I heard about this. An enlightened high school teacher filled us in.): From Liz Smith's column, 6/19/01: I SEE Laura Bush finally spoke out about her twin daughters, saying that most parents of teenagers understood the problems she and the president face in dealing with their offspring. She was charming and convincing. So now here is a P.S. on the Texas drinking laws. A New Hampshire writer, Mark Steyn, penned the following sympathetic article in London's Sunday Telegraph. In his argument, Steyn blames the entire thing on a famous Republican whom he says is "a regulatory megalomaniac." He means Elizabeth Dole, a person who, early in the last presidential election, actually had her own hat in the ring before giving up and backing George W. Bush. Steyn says it's perfectly normal for college kids who can't drink until they're 21 to use fake I.D. and make their parents nuts. In fact, his headline reads: "America's Alcohol Laws Would Drive Anyone to Drink." He points out that it's all Libby Dole's fault. Some states once had age 21 laws but back when Mrs. Dole was with the federal Transportation Department in 1984, she decided she knew better than anyone the age at which people could drink. "Although she lacked the constitutional authority to legislate in this area, she had some financial muscle. She informed all 50 states that she would take away the federal highway funding from states refusing to raise the drinking age to 21. South Dakota went all the way to the Supreme Court ..." But Libby prevailed. Actually, says Steyn, Mrs. Dole, whom he refers to as "Nurse Ratched," believes the drinking age should be 24. Steyn observes, "It would make more sense the other way round. Instead of starting drinking at 24, you should stop drinking when you're 24, sober up and go to work." His summation is pretty interesting. "The only problem that Jenna Bush has is getting a drink. She and her twin, Barbara, are 19, and in all 50 states, it's illegal to drink alcohol under the age of 21. Jenna can drive, vote, marry, own a house, join the Army, buy firearms and hop a flight to Vermont with a lesbian, get one of the state's new 'civil union' licenses and spend the night having as much sex as she wants. She can do everything an adult can except go into a Tex-Mex restaurant and wash down her incendiary enchiladas with a margarita. She could buy a handgun, shoot up the liquor store and steal the beer. But she cannot walk in and purchase any." It's a fascinating argument, but I'll bet Libby Dole still thinks she is right. House parties get old after a while, and you never really meet any new people. We live in the only country in the world that has a drinking age of 21... WTF? Who's to say that the day you turn 21 you're all of the sudden "ready" to start drinking ? It's bullshit. I WANNA GO GET WASTED AND MEET CHICKS DAMMIT! PHILLY LOVES O&A! Adopter: Rone

O&A Board Regular Registered: Nov. 00 | There's only one way I can think of that the drinking age will ever be changed. No politician will support it because they'll look like they support drunk driving and crazy frat parties. There political opponents would use it to bury them. A million 18-20 year olds marching through Washington won't change it. 50 and 60 year old poiticians just don't take the ADD generation seriously. What will change it is another major war (haven't had one since the drinking age changed.) When you have thousands of 19 and 20 year old veterans returning from a year in hell, when you have a 20 year old kid who had his legs shot off being denied a beer at the bar because he's not 21 shown on the evening news, that's when the legal drinking age will change. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | The whole issue depends on publicity. if there are a whole bunch of drunk driving accidents caused by teenagers in a short span of time, politicians will call it a travesty and try to get stricter alcohol laws. even if a war comes about like Dent mentioned, a couple moronic 19 year olds who drive off a bridge or something while wasted are gonna ruin it for the rest of us. Here's to the nights we felt alive Here's to the tears you knew you'd cry Here's to goodbye, tomorrow is gonna come too soon...

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I think that its an issue of maturity. I know plenty of 18 year olds who shouldn't be allowed to drink...they are immature and reckless. My graduating class lost 4 people because a 19 year old was drunk and driving and slammed into their car as they left a movie theater...how mature was that 19 year old? I'm not saying that people 21 years and older aren't doing the same thing...but where do we draw the line? Any age group could argue that they should be able to drink legally... No age limit will ever satisfy everyone... Guard within yourself that treasure, kindness! ~GS So what if I'm a good girl? It doesn't mean I can't defend myself!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Nov. 00 | Italy had no drinking age, until American tourists started causing problems. Then they started a drinking age in the tourist areas. American kids abuse alcohol because its forbidden. If american teens could have a beer with Dad while watching the game or a glass of wine with dinner like European kids, there would be far less of a problem and far fewer alcoholic adults. Most alcoholism is TRIGGERED by abuse. "I don't read books, but I have friends who do." -Presidential Candidate George W. O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Alright, before you throw your empty bottles at me, hear me out. People between the ages of 18 and 21 are twice as likely to get in a alcohol-related car accident. Now, as someone who has lost loved ones to Drunk Driving, i fully support the drinking age laws. They keep those who cant tolerate alcohol from getting behind the wheel and being involved in a potentially fatal accident. So you cant have a beer, so what? If those laws keep one minor at that frat party from going out and mowing down a family of 4, then they are well worth it. Your right to have a good time ends when they infringe upon another's right to LIVE. Also the thing about things because things being so forbidden that teens must do them is true. My parents allowed to have a bit alchohol when I was young and still today. They don't let me get wasted but now I don't feel like going out and getting completely shitfaced always. Psychopath Registered: Nov. 00 | Why is it that our country has one of the highest rates of alcoholism in the world when countries that do not have a drinking age have far lower rates? Makes you think. Mr. Dent makes a great point when he stated that young adults drink because it is forbidden. It’s the same with teenage smoking. apodted...graduated?...by Fez...oh, dear god help me.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | It's part of that whole puritanical christian crap. If alcohol were legal for <21yr olds, there might be a little more drinking, but for the most part, it could be dealt with better by parents. Of course, if your parents are alcoholics... oh well. I do believe a lot of alcoholics start pre drinking age, and get worse later in life. I was allowed a small amount of alcohol periodically as a kid, and teen, and It has never had a hold on me, for any length of time. The stupid shall be punished!
