I got a letter today from the IRS. It turns out I'm not eligible for the new tax cut checks they're going to start sending out this summer. Why? Because my parents claimed me as a dependent on their taxes? Why should that matter? I still paid federal income taxes. I paid the same rate as everyone else. I filed my taxes seperately. I didn't include my W-2s in my parents tax return. The federal tax came from MY hard earned money, not anyone elses. This is fucking bullshit. I know its only $150 but I really could have used it. I'm 21 god damn it. I vote, I count, I have to pay the highest car insurance amounts in the country. Now give me my money!

Hate to do this to you, but if are claimed as a dependent then you actually pay a drastically reduced rate, not even close to what others pay. I know, it sucks not to get it, but I know people whose parents are giving them some since your money is actually being included as part of what they get back. I'd go after the 'rents

Actually, you have to file seperately. There is a box on the return that you check yes for "Can someone else claim you as a dependent on their return?" The flip side is that at age 21, unless you are a full time student they can not claim you. If you are a full time student and they pay tuition they are basically required to.

must be nice to actually earn enough to owe that much. i'm only getting $194 because my taxable income wasn't high enough to get the full $300. this is basically just another pathetic little prize to appease the people who are living comfortably. meanwhile, those of us who work our asses off are stuck with no benefits, no doctors, high insurance, high rent, and nothing out there to offer any kind of relief in the future...

Work smarter, not harder. This country is great in that you only need to figure out "the game" to make more money for yourself and get better jobs. For the most part, there is a trick, there is a game. Some of the steps are small, but sometimes you have to work harder at working smarter. I am quite sure that Alex Rodriguez works nowhere near as hard as you do, but he sure enjoys his $20,000,000 a year salary.

Do something that people need, that they will pay a premium for and you'll be golden. You can do whatever you want to do within reason.

So far as I know, and correct me if I'm wrong, you need to have made $6,000 a year last year as a single filer to get the $300 ($12,000 for married couple) Does that mean you made $3,880 last year?

I dunno, all I know is that I pay WELL over $25,000 in taxes alone a year. Where does that money go? To people like Ol' Dirty and Angel, who we heard on the show letting us all know how they love to suckle from the government teet! Ok, terrific! I guess I work so they don't have to.

So you'll forgive those of us who get the full $300 or $500 or $600 if we're happy about the fact that we finally get something back!

Spork, are you implying that I don't work hard? Last year I worked 30 hour weeks on top of being a full time student. Thats not exactly easy. I have a right to be pissed when I pay the same exact tax rate as anyone else who made as much money as I did, but don't get a refund because I still live at home. Thats absolute bullshit. I paid federal taxes on each and every one of my paychecks, I deserve to get a refund. To me, a few hundred dollars is a lot of money. That can mean the difference between a late car payment and one thats on time. 20 year olds have the same living expenses as older people, but we get screwed on everything from insurance rates to how we're treated come tax refund time. If you pay $25,000 in taxes a year, $600 isn't going to make such a huge difference to you. But to me, and people in my situation, its a lot.

Bawxed - I wasn't implying that at all. I think in your situation something is squirrely with the way your taxes are being handled in general.

If you don't get the refund check now, you should be able to get that check later. It's just a rate reduction, so I would think that you could claim it on your 2001 taxes when you file next year.

What you must do is get out of your head the notion that because I pay so much in taxes I shouldn't care about the $600 I am getting back. That is exactly the point, I DO care about it! I want more, but I am happy to get something, anything back.

What I don't like to hear is people complaining that they only get $150 and I get $600. Look at the situation from my point of view. If I'm paying what I pay in taxes it means I'm doing something right, AND I contribute more than my share to the general public. I AM entitled to my money.

You should check with someone who is more familiar with the tax code and check and make sure what's going on with your particular tax situation. The rate was reduced retroactively so you should still be able to claim that $300 down the line. You or your parents, depending on who is paying your tuition, also get Hope scholarship tax credits worth quite a pretty penny too, don't forget.

I don't want to get into a Person X deserves more than Person Y. Bottom line is we ALL deserve more of our hard-earned money back!

As I said before, if you live at home and your parents can claim you as a dependent then you DON'T pay the same tax rate. You pay MUCH less. So you saying that you pay the same is completely false. Sorry, but if you filed your taxes properly this is the way it works. The rate is low enough that you actually make out better then the people who got the $300, plus you will get all of what you paid in, or almost all back when you file in April. You are going to get the money, you just have to file to get it.

I can't stand it when people that only have to pay 15% of their income complain. I pay over 30%. For every $1000 I make Uncle Sam takes over $300. So now you can go off about how I make more money, yeah but I have a family to support and when that much of your income goes to the government, it makes it difficult.

Bawxed, something to keep in mind. Eligibility for the rebate, is based on last years taxes, when you were claimed as a dependent. Therefore your parents get your refund, as part of their total refund, but because of the cap on the refund, they aren't actually getting it either. Sad to say, but here is a good lesson in taxes. Now get out and vote your economic freedom. Too bad neither party is very good with that. The thing is, did we ever get a meaningfull tax cut, or rebate from Clinton? I think not!

Heaaa fishy fishy fishy fishy. And it went, wherever I, did go!

If it makes you feel better... I got a letter that I
was getting $600 back (yeah...that's right six
hundred dollars). The next day I got a certified
letter from the NY STATE Tax dept saying they
were keeping it 'cause I still owe them from
two years ago! I've been sending them $300 a
month for two years... go figgure.

Yes, because you're parents claimed you as a dependent. So as someone mentioned earlier the fuck you is to your parents. And no, I do not believe that you can file as head of household and as a dependent of another within the same tax year.

You do know that the tax incentives extend well beyond the checks they are sending out, don't you? The marginal rates are dropping with a 10 year plan to completely drop the lower rate. So as of next year and until 2010 those of you who earn 20,000 a year, for example, should see a decrease each year in the taxes you pay up until 2010 where you will not be paying federal taxes at all, providing you are within the income bracket called for by the tax code for this incentive.

And to NY_Cracker if you would have done your taxes correctly for 1999 you wouldn't be owing that MUCH money right now, would you? Perhaps, you didn't file at all for that year. Who knows, but if you owe money for state taxes, federal taxes, alimony and/or child support you will not receive your tax retroactive check. If you had your taxes done for that year by H&R Block you can take it back to them. If it is found that the error was made by them and not due to you not providing them with all of the necessary paperwork, then they will pay the IRS for you. In that event you should obtain a copy of the front and back of that cashed check for future reference in case you receive an audit within the next 7 years. ;)

Considering you could be jailed for not paying any of those four things, consider yourself lucky that you are getting a check that is going to cover part of your debt, automatically, giving you no chance to spend the money and continue with the open debt. ;)

Are you kidding me, we had one of the highest tax hikes in our nation's history during his first two years. Thank God, for the republican majority of both houses in 1994 or we would have seen an even higher tax hike with Gephardt's tax increase plan. The same one he is discussing to propose now. The sad thing is, if the Republicans don't get the seats they need in this November's election and in next year's election there won't be enough votes to block the proposal, which means as you will begin to pay less and less federal taxes over the next 10 years, thanks to Bush's plan, you'll have a year to year increase on your FICA & Social Security taxes, on the Gephardt plan.

Maybe now, some of you are beginning to realize why I jumped ship in 1996 and became the Republican I am today. You see this "democratic" party is suppose to be for the "poor" and all they ever seem to do is hurt us.

njstrawberry, very well said. I'm on your bandwagon 110%, but I wouldn't consider you one of the "poor" people that Democratic Party is supposed to be for. After all, you have a job, right? The Democratic Party is for lowlifes like Ol' Dirty -- don't get me wrong, the guy makes great radio, but were it not for that he'd simply be a number -- and backwards-ass Mississippi hicks that decide to cut their feet off live on the www-net (Buddy Esben reference).
