The sporting news is talking about Eric Lindros playing again. They brought up an interesting point: What is the most disturbing/devastating one ice injury? Please keep opinions to NHL. I have heard stories about skates going over eyes, fingers, etc..., but I thnk we all know about the NHL ones. Here are my opinions:

1) Clint Malarchuk. I don't have to explain it.
2) Bryan Berard getting a stick in the eye.
3) Trent McLeary blocking a slapshot with his voicebox.
4) Eric Lindros getting a concussion from Scott Steven's shoulder pad.
5) Claude Lemieux's hit on Kris Draper.

220, 221, whatever it takes.

Showering Carmine with paternal love.

i'd have to say 1,2,3, and 5 are all bad, 4 is just funny ;)
malarchuk is prolly the grossest. berard's is the saddest, and mcleary's is the most "holy shit, that could happen to me" -est. lemieux's was just fucking dirty.
i know you said no minors, but just to bring up jeff libby, isles prospect who got the skate in the eye and lost the eye. that was a bad one.

Who did Dino Ciccarelli hit over the head with a stick. I remember he spent a night in jail.

I go with Malarchuk too.

Definitely Malarchuk. I can still see the blood shooting out of his throat.

Another non-NHL one that's pretty bad is Travis Roy. Any injury that leaves you paralyzed is a bad one.

I'd have to go with the Bryan Berard getting a stick in the eye that sadly ended what could've been a brilliant career and the hit that McSorley laid on Brashear last season. Ouch, that was nasty.

Here is the article on McCleary.

At first glance it didn't appear that horrible. It wasn't Clint Malarchuk getting his jugular cut by a skate blade and almost dying on the ice. It wasn't Michel Goulet's check into the boards that split his head open.

It didn't seem harmless, but even when McCleary passed out leaving the ice, you felt like you've seen worse: gorier hits; guys hitting the ice harder; even earlier this season when Montreal's Brian Savage hit the ice head first. We've seen things on first glance that would appear to be more serious.

Philadelphia's Chris Therien, who has a very hard, heavy shot, launched a one-timer from deep out and called for help immediately. Therien said he once got struck by a deflected puck in practice; it went up his stick and hit his arm and he couldn't believe the pain even with something as minor as that. Therien was very upset, saying McCleary was hurt trying to make a great play for his team. McCleary is a heart-and-soul type player -- that was the discussion Therien was having with teammate Mark Recchi, who used to play in Montreal.

There's a way to block shots. You block them feet first or with your legs. There's a definite technique. But I don't think anybody would look at the tape and say McCleary did anything wrong. It was more of a fluky thing.

I was struck by the amount of emotion in the Molson Centre ... not just in the Montreal room, but in the other room, the Flyers' room, where there was a noticeable pall. The crowd was not told what was going on, but you could see as he was being helped by the trainer and teammate Patrick Poulin that McCleary was basically out on his feet. His eyes kind of rolled back in his head.

I agree with that top 5...with these also to be added to mix.

6. Gordie Howe being plowed into the boards, fracturing his skull. An iron plate was put in.

7. Derian Hatcher's crosscheck on Jeremy Roenick's face, crushing his jaw. It was viscious.

8. Dale Hunter's hit, dislocating Pierre Turgeon's shoulder after the goal in overtime vs. Washington during the 1990 Playoffs.

Malarchuk - definitely the KING of all NHL injuries. I mean, Christ, the SPURTING blood and the POOL of blood and I remember hearing this one woman SCREAMING - ick! That was just so hideous, that thing just burns in your brain.

Michel Goulet's injury really was bad, I saw that one live on TV - he had one of those shitty little Jofa helmets (the ones with no padding) and he just slid head first into the boards. I believe he went into a coma and didn't wake up for several days.

Rich Sutter when he was playing for the Canucks got cross-checked from behind into the boards by Craig Berube on his first stint with the Flyers and he bruised his spine. The silence was just eerie after that.

I think it was Dave Capuano of the Canucks who got either cross checked in the face or cross-checked into the boards face-first and he ended up swallowing several of his own teeth, I think he either swallowed or nearly swallowed his tongue, a lot of these were just more scary than anything.

I remember Mogilny's leg folding under behind him as it SNAPPED in the 1993 playoffs when he was playing against Montreal.

Then there are ones that aren't super super bad looking, but when you think about how painful they are it's just brutal. Like Pat Peake of the Capitals, he got tripped chasing down an icing and slammed HEEL first into the boards. He SHATTERED his heel. Crap ass, how much could that hurt? Eeek.

Sadly there are more I can think of, but that's enough gruesomness for now.

I was at a Flyers game a few years back (Had to be before 96 cause they were still playing at the Spectrum) Donald Brashear of the Canadiens nailed Peter Svoboda at center ice. he just laid there not moving. the whole place went silent. Most of us in the crowd were convinced he was dead. It was a rather scary moment. He was taken off on a stretcher and it was announced later that he had regained consiousness on the way to the hospital. Craig MacTavich managed to beat the piss out of Brashear later in the 3rd and the Flyers went on to win 3-2 in OT.

Svoboda has that giant giraffe neck - it's an accident waiting to happen. I guess he had so many vertebrae that none of them were damaged!

When he played for Montreal, I came up with a little nickname for him "Peanut Brittle on Skates." It just keeps being a suitable name - the guy is PLAGUED with injuries!

I think the top 5 + goochs are right + Jeff Bukeboom getting sucker punched in the back of the head and then hitting the ice.
And the Hit between Pilon and K. Stevens that after Stevens hit the ice his face was shattered
