| ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Jason Sehorn's status for the New York Giants' season opener in doubt Thursday after an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee was postponed because of an infection.
The skin infection on the lower portion of Sehorn's right leg will be treated with antibiotics, head coach Jim Fassel said.
If the infection clears, doctors will irrigate the cornerback's knee Monday, two weeks before the Giants' Sept. 10 season opener against the Denver Broncos.
Sehorn had swelling in the knee for the past week. Doctors believe it was caused by some loose particles and not a structural problem.
Sehorn missed a day of practice last week with an infected right toe. The skin infection is on the same leg, but Fassel did not know if it was related to the toe infection.
Dr. Russell Warren opted to delay the arthroscopic procedure.
Sehorn will be hospitalized overnight and released Friday, Fassel said.
Sehorn will be able to start running a week after the procedure on his knee.
Asked if Sehorn would be ready for the Denver game, Fassel said: "It puts a little tighter squeeze. But again, Jason is in good shape."
Sehorn missed the Giants' preseason game with the Jacksonville Jaguars last week after complaining of soreness in the knee. Some excess fluid was drained and an MRI test was performed. It did not reveal any damage, the team said.
Sehorn practiced Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Emmanuel McDaniel, who started last week for Sehorn, will again replace him when the Giants play the New York Jets on Saturday in a preseason game.
Will Allen, the Giants' first-round draft choice, will also get more action, playing in nickel packages with the first-team defense. So will third-round pick Will Peterson.
Sehorn had reconstructive surgery on his right knee in 1998 after he was injured returning the opening kickoff in a preseason game against the Jets at Giants Stadium.
Sehorn missed the entire 1998 season and had a so-so season the following year, which ended when he broke his left leg against the Jets.
One of the NFL's top cornerbacks before he was hurt in 1998, Sehorn finally started to regain that form in the latter half of last season, helping the Giants reach the Super Bowl.
His season was highlighted by a kickoff return for a touchdown on a squib kick against Jacksonville in the final game of the regular season and a highlight-reel interception return for a TD in the NFC semifinal against Philadelphia.
With the Giants leading 10-0, Sehorn made a diving, juggling interception of Donovan McNabb's pass along the sideline, tipping the ball to himself as he was on the ground. The eight-year veteran then got up and ran the ball into the end zone.
A second-round draft pick out of Southern California in 1994, Sehorn was switched from safety to cornerback and moved into the starting lineup in 1996.

| Great when he plays. The question is: Will he play? Seems awful prone to injury.

| I thought maybe he pulled his groin banging the shit out of Angie Harmon.
Hopefully when he is back he will play at 100%, he hasn't really been at that level since the season ending injury in 98.
Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, I like the idea of a chick with a horse.

| this guy is really starting to piss me off. I mean, he is a good player who makes very athletic plays, but it seems like he is always injured, and he isnt exactly the greatest cover guy. I want him to be healthy and perform well for us, but hes gotta stay healthy, and focus on football.
