O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 00 | from newyorkislanders.com Peca’s Islander Wish Comes True By Kerry Gwydir and Nancy Koenig (August 29) Call it wishful thinking on Michael Peca’s part. At Wednesday’s press conference to announce the Islander center’s official signing of a long-term deal, Peca admitted that even before the Islanders acquired his rights on June 24 he was interested in becoming an Islander. “Brad Isbister was my roommate at the World Championships last May,†Peca said. “I told him to put in a good word for me with Mike [Milbury]. Contrary to what some people thought about the Islanders, I thought just the opposite. I believed this would be a great opportunity.†Thanks to a crafty Draft Day move by Milbury, the wishes of both Peca and all of those in Islander Country have come true. It was a whirlwind day for the Islanders and one of their newest players as Peca officially penned his contract and then pulled his No. 27 jersey on for the first time. What’s just as neat is that Isbister and Dave Scatchard, both who already have forged friendships in the past with Peca, along with Jason Krog were on hand for the ceremony at The Vanderbilt in Plainview. Said Peca: “To come to an organization that’s really turning in the right direction and has an ownership and management that has a commitment to putting something in front of the fans that is a winning concept, I’m very happy to be part of this. More importantly, as a team, we want to establish a winning attitude immediately in camp and carry it through the rest of the season. It’s going to be important to maintain that mindset.†The press conference began with Milbury stepping to the podium to welcome those in attendance. Milbury was joined on the dais by coach Peter Laviolette, Peca and Peca’s representative, Don Meehan. The GM celebrated Charles Wang’s big win for Computer Associates, spoke about this also being a big day for Islander fans and then handed a pen to his new center to officially consummate the deal. Soon after, Milbury and Peca posed for the media with the center in his game-ready Islanders sweater. “When this transaction first came about back in June and we were able to acquire a player of this man’s stature, we were all excited about it,†said Milbury. “Then we had to get through the process of the ugly part, the money part. I want to thank [agent] Don Meehan for being the professional that he’s always been. We actually got through this without any sarcastic remarks by me. â€We have one guy (Alexei Yashin) to go. Hopefully we’ll have a clean slate and a good start and we’ll have turned a major corner.†As the press conference began to break down into individual interviews, there was nothing but excitement in the air – particularly from the Islanders’ head coach and two of Peca’s teammates. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a person who is the tremendous hockey player and person Michael Peca is,†said Laviolette. “He brings tremendous leadership qualities and a work ethic to the New York Islanders.†Laviolette touched on the process of naming the team’s new captain and said that Peca and several other players, including Alexei Yashin, are potential candidates for the role. Laviolette said, “It’ll play itself out during training camp, but we won’t name anybody until then.†Meanwhile, Peca had a chance to catch up with his old buddies Isbister and Scatchard. As it turns out, Scatchard met Peca at an orientation camp a few years back in Vancouver. “Pecs talked about how he wanted to come to the Islanders and then we ended up being roommates in Germany,†said Isbister. “We were joking around about that, wondering if maybe Mike Milbury had been in charge of making up the roommate list. We talked about the possibility of him coming here and it’s exciting that it came true.†Said Scatchard: “I don’t think you need too look too far to see we’re right around the corner from being one of the best teams in the league. I live on the west coast of Canada and people are talking about us all the way over there. Now we have to go out there and back up the expectations.†[email protected] I'm off to Franklin Pierce College in September. Go Ravens! LET'S GO ISLANDERS

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Uni, switch the Islanders points around than maybe. 92 points, you are on f'n crack. Islanders last place and out of the playoffs again. You actually need a goaltender who can stop the puck and not the swiss cheese goalies they have now.
