SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Barry Bonds became the fifth player in baseball history to hit 60 homers in a season, a right field blast in the second inning of San Francisco's game against Arizona on Thursday.

Bonds' shot came off Albie Lopez on a 2-2 count, and the sellout crowd at Pacific Bell Park jumped up as it sailed over the wall. Jeff Kent, waiting on deck, shook hands with a smiling Bonds as he crossed home plate.

As the crowd chanted "Barry! Barry!'' he made a curtain call and tipped his cap.

Bonds had never hit more than 49 homers in a season before this season. He joined Babe Ruth (60 in 1927), Roger Maris (61 in 1961), Mark McGwire (70 in 1998; 65 in 1999) and Sammy Sosa (66 in 1998; 63 in 1999).
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Just ten to go before Barry breaks Mark McGwire's record. With about 20 games left, he has to hit about one every two games.

EDIT1 -- Whoops, he needs ten to TIE.

Well if ya think about it, theyre pitching to Bonds more than when McGwire was chasing the record. Hes getting less intentional walks than McWire did.

  1. He's 38 and wants security (5 yrs.)
  2. Giants have hinted that if they go far in Oct., they'll prolly keep him.
  3. He's not the best clubhouse presence.
  4. Guys like this and Bobby V don't mix too well.
But you can never predict with dem Mets.

Well he won't be a Met because Steve Phillips will talk trash about him (Alex Rodriguez) and won't pay him.

Besides for all the Mets fans, the Mets are just as good as they were last year. Right?

Reasons he might play in NY
1) he doesn't get enough national publicity on west coast
2) if you discount age (a big factor), he would perfectly fit into Mets; ie. power hitting, good fielding, left-hand hitting, great OBP outfielder
3) His agent is Boras, who while seemingly one of Steve Phillips least favorite people, always goes for the money, and SF has said they do not have unlimited funds.
4) Mets would love to get back page away from Yankees, and Bonds approaching 700 hrs as a Met would do that
5) His godfather is Willie Mays, who played for Giants and finished his career as a Met.
5) Bobby V type players is over-rated. People said Bobby doesn't like superstars - he gets along with Piazza great., he got along with Juan Gonzalez and Sammy Sosa with Rangers.

This doesn't mean I think Bonds would be great for Mets though because of age & sourness.

Of course, because of 4 & 5 above, it is possible Steingrabber would want him to play LF instead of Knoblach.

Bonds will not play for the Yankees. Giambi might. Phillips and the management of the Mets are a bunch of cheap bastards. Maybe the Mets can learn from Steinbrenner. he makes his money because he keeps investing it into the Yankees. They are the most recognized, most honored, most profitable team in all of sports in the entire world. I just love how teams bitch that Steinbrenner keeps buying championships when half of his starting lineup came from the farm system. What about Baltimore, Boston, Atlanta, the Dodgers, the Mets. All big city team, with large payrolls who care more about making a profit than putting a winning ballclub on the field and doing it consistently.

I give teams like Philadelphia, Minnesota, and Oakland credit, teams who can't afford to keep up with he big city markets but do their best and show it on the field.

There is only one guy on the Mets that I would like to play for the Yankees and that is Al Leiter. The rest are a bunch of underachieving crybabies.

He's getting less intentional walks because he has a good hitter behind him.

Personally I don't want to see him break it. I'm not a Bonds fan in any sense of the term. I like Macgwire, it fits him better, he deserves it more.

I know Bonds said in past that he wouldn't want to play for Yankees because they dissed his father; however money and fame can never be discounted. Giambi wants to come to yankees, yes. However, Bonds replacing Knoblach is a better fit than Giambi instead of Nick Johnson. Do I think it will happen? no. Could it? absolutely.

The "new" Steinbrenner (since 1995 or so?) absolutely. Not about spending money on players (Despite appearances, Wilpon & Doubleday do spend money - they just don't do it wisely). What Steinbrenner has done is listen to Stick Michael, hire Brian Cashman as GM, and spend money on scouting and minor league development. Biggest difference between Yankees and Mets is Yankees have best minors, which either translates to players for their team or trade bait. Mets haven't done this.

When have Mets been crybabys? Their fans? maybe. I have never heard their players bitch except about the Clemens- Piazza incident. And if you are referring to that, just remember what Torre said before Clemens donned pinstripes.
Piazza - HOF offensive, calls good game, blocks balls in dirt well, hustles all the time (both defensive & offensive), plays even if injurred, throws poorly.
Edgardo Alfonzo - 28 yr old Gold glove type defensive player at 3rd & 2nd, lifetime .290BA, .364OBP hitter, who last year was .324BA, .425OBP, .542SLG. If you watch him, you'll see he is as smart a player as there is: hitting behind runners, knowing when to take a pitch, etc. Is he having bad year? absolutely. Is he an all-star player - no question.

Here are two players that ANY team would be happy to have.

Oakland - Billy Beane screwed Mets twice; 1st time when Mets chose him instead of Mark McGwire because they were afraid McGwire wouldn't sign, and later when he became great GM who stuck Mets on several trades.

I forgot one.

Those concepts are not mutually exclusive. Their farm system is DEFINITELY helped by Steinbrenner's spending. What other organization could afford to pay Andy Morales millions for him to suck, or pay to acquire Drew Henson and pay him millions before he even reaches AAA, or be willing to pay Roger Clemens salary when they traded for him?

Steinbrenner cares about profit. He is just in a position where the Yankees take in the most money by far. If the yankees lost money, you'd see how fast he'd bitch and make changes. To his credit though, he does understand you need to spend to make money.

Having said that, I don't have a problem with Yankees spending; that's capitalism, and within the rules. No matter what team I rooted for I'd wish my team spent like that.

Now his bitching about the "terrible condition" of yankee stadium - that's another story.

Piazza is great and one of the best in the game but I still like Posada better and he is younger with a huge upside and is getting better every year.

It's good to see a brotha getting close to the record.

I wouldn't see him in mets uni though. Phillips will probally do something dumb in order to try and get him.

Oh course george has a wheelbarrow of cash waiting for him in the bronx of course.

Bonds hits three homers, now at 63

DENVER (AP) - Barry Bonds hit three home runs Sunday to give him 63 for the season, passing Roger Maris' once-magical mark and moving him closer to Mark McGwire's record.

Playing at Coors Field, Bonds broke Maris' record of 61 for most homers in a season by a left-handed hitter.

Bonds has 18 games left to break McGwire's record of 70 set in 1998.

After an off-day Monday, Bonds and the San Francisco Giants begin a series at Houston's homer-friendly Enron Field.

Bonds hit No. 61 in the first inning to match Maris' then-major league record 61 homers for the New York Yankees in 1961. Bonds broke the mark with No. 62 in the fifth.

Bonds added a three-run homer in the 11th off Colorado reliever Todd Belitz.

Bonds also became the fastest to reach 62 homers, doing it in his 144th game. Mark McGwire needed 145 games to reach 62 when he broke Maris' record by hitting 70 homers in 1998.

In the first, on a 1-1 count, Bonds launched a 488-foot solo shot off Colorado's Scott Elarton. Bonds' soaring drive struck a beer sign beyond the center-field wall.

It was the third-longest homer in Coors Field history, exceeded only by a 496-foot shot by Mike Piazza and a 493-footer by Larry Walker.

In the fifth, Bonds lined a 2-2 pitch from Elarton that just cleared the right-field wall.

Maris, whose record stood for 37 years, had been surpassed only by McGwire and Sammy Sosa - both right-handed hitters.

Bonds struck out looking in the third. He had gone homerless on Friday and Saturday.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Things are looking bleak for Barry, mind you that Mark McGwire hit four homers in his last two (TWO!) games and apparently these writers don't take that into account.

Barry needs to quicken his pace, he needs to go on a streak he had in July if he wishes to tie/break McGwire's record. I really hope he does it, I am rooting for the underdog in this one; no one wants him to break it because it would make light of the Home Run record having been broken after standing for only three years. But I am rooting for him regardless.

EDIT1--

Well after I posted the original article Bonds hit another one and is ahead of McGwire's pace of 1998.

The game is still in the eighth inning and the Giants would have to send 7 more men to the plate for Bonds to get another turn at bat, stay tuned.

EDIT2--Can you believe this? Just when I had given up hope and talk was receding on his chances he hits three dingers in Colorado, the last in extra innings. Seven to tie, eight to break, in 18 games left.

LOL!! I needed that good laugh.

On a related note, Derek Jeter is great and all, but I like Rey Ordonez better.

Ha ha....

Seriously, I do like Posada. Hes a solid player. But you would rather have him than Piazza? Come on Get Real.
