Khabibulin finally gets out of Phoenix

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

The Phoenix Coyotes decided they had dragged their heels long enough on the long-awaited trade of disgruntled goalie Nikolai Khabibulin.

On Monday night, the Coyotes dealt Khabibulin and defenseman Stan Neckar to the Tampa Bay Lightning for right wing Mike Johnson, defenseman Paul Mara, a minor leaguer and a second round draft pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

"We are very pleased to acquire Mike Johnson, Paul Mara and Ruslan Zainullin from Tampa Bay," Coyotes GM Cliff Fletcher said. "Johnson is a skilled forward that will be able to play on our top two lines and Mara is a young defenseman with great potential, who has already played in 100 National Hockey League games at 21 years of age.

"In addition, we were able to get Zainullin, who our scouts really like. He's a skilled forward that we ranked very high in last year's Entry Draft."

Mara, 21, played in 46 games with the Lightning this season and collected 6-10-16 and 40 penalty minutes in his 2nd NHL season. He also played 10 games this season with the Detroit Vipers (IHL) and recorded 3-3-6 and 22 PIM.

The 6-foot-4 inch , 210-pound blueliner was originally drafted by the Lightning in the first round (7th overall) of the 1997 Entry Draft. In 54 games with the Lightning in 1999-2000, Mara registered 7-11-18 and 73 PIM. Mara represented the United States in three World Junior Championships (1997, 1998 and 1999), winning the Silver Medal in 1997. In his first NHL game on Apr. 17, 1999, he scored a goal and an assist against Florida.

In his fifth NHL season, the 26-year-old Johnson recorded 11-27-38 and 38 PIM in 64 games with Tampa Bay this season. The 6-foot-2 inch, 197-pound forward has collected at least 44 points in each of the last three seasons. He was never drafted by an NHL team but signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent, Mar. 16, 1997.

The 19-year-old Zainullin recorded 1-2-3 and 10 PIM in 23 games this season with Ak-Bars Kazan (Russia). The 6-foot-2 inch, 202-pound forward was originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round (34th overall) of the 2000 Entry Draft. Last season, the Kazan, Russia native scored 13 goals and 19 points in 12 games with Ak Bars Kazan-2.

"I'm excited about the players we've acquired in this trade," said Coyotes' Managing Partner Wayne Gretzky. "Cliff Fletcher has improved our hockey team by adding some skill, toughness and young talent. We've also acquired a top draft pick in this summer's Entry Draft."

Khabibulin had not played for the Coyotes since Game 7 of the 1999 Western Conference Quarterfinals vs St. Louis on May 4, 1999. The 28-year-old netminder played five seasons in the NHL, all with the Coyotes/Jets franchise.

He compiled a record of 126-113-30, a 2.75 goals against average and a .908 save percentage in 284 games. He ranks second on the all-time franchise list in games played (284), minutes played (16,027) and wins (126), and first on the all-time franchise list in shutouts (21). In 24 playoff games, he had a 10-13 record and a 2.75 goals against average. Khabibulin was drafted by the Coyotes in the 1992 Entry Draft (8th choice, 204th overall).

"Nikolai Khabibulin is a premier NHL goaltender," said Gretzky. "He's been a great player for our organization for many years, and we wish him well in the future with Tampa Bay. Stan Neckar worked very hard and performed well for our team over the last two years. I'm sure he'll be a nice addition for Tampa Bay as well."

Neckar, 25, played in 53 games with the Coyotes this season and recorded 2-2-4 and 63 PIM. He was originally acquired from the NY Rangers for Jason Doig and a 6th round choice in the 1999 Entry Draft on Mar. 23, 1999. He played in 130 games in his career with the Coyotes and registered 4-11-15 totals and 109 PIM. Neckar also played in 11 playoff games and recorded 0-1-1 and 4 PIM.

The draft choice involved in the trade (2nd round in 2001) originally belonged to the NY Islanders but was traded to Tampa Bay on June 23, 2000 with Kevin Weekes and Kristian Kudroc in exchange for three draft choices (5th overall, 105th overall and 202nd overall) in the 2000 Entry Draft.

With six players involved, this deal is the franchise's biggest trade since the Winnipeg Jets traded Teemu Selanne, Marc Chouinard and a 4th round draft choice (Kim Staal) in the 1996 Entry Draft to Anaheim in exchange for Oleg Tverdovsky, Chad Kilger and a 3rd round draft choice (Per-Anton Lundstrom) in the 1996 Entry Draft on Feb. 7, 1996.

Coyotes ship Khabibulin to Tampa Bay in six-player deal
March 5, 2001
SportsLine.com wire reports

PHOENIX -- It took nearly two years, but the Phoenix Coyotes finally have rid themselves of goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin.

Now, he's the Tampa Bay Lightning's problem.

The Coyotes sent the holdout and defenseman Stan Neckar to the Lightning on Monday night for right wings Mike Johnson and Ruslan Zainullin, defenseman Paul Mara and a second-round draft pick in 2001.

Khabibulin has been a restricted free agent since the Coyotes were eliminated from the Western Conference playoffs in 1999. The two sides had been unable to reach an agreement on a new deal, leaving the goalie in limbo.

A two-time All-Star, Khabibulin resorted to playing for Long Beach in the International Hockey League last season and has not played organized hockey in a year.

If he and the Lightning are able to agree on terms, one of the worst teams in the NHL will finally have stability in the nets. Tampa Bay has gone through 13 goaltenders in the past four seasons.

While the Lightning get a star goalie, the Coyotes get a solid right wing in Johnson, who has 11 goals and 27 assists in 64 games this season. He could step in for veteran Claude Lemiuex, who is out indefinitely with an ankle injury.

Mara will be a project for Phoenix after disappointing the Tampa Bay brass. A first-round pick in 1997, the 6-4, 210-pounder has 13 goals, 22 assists and a minus-44 rating in 100 NHL games.

Good I didnt want Khabibulin anyway, especially for the price it was going to take.

Interesting that he went to Tampa Bay, I think the Rangers package discussed was just as good as Tampa's but then again Im not too familiar with Tampa Bay's prospects.

But Tampa Bay still sucks

Excatly CYN, I don't know why the Rangers wanted him in the first place. I think Richter has a good two years left in him, and I think they could go out and get a better goaltender than Khabibulin if that is what they wanted. But I think most agree when I still say that the Rangers suck. Right Francine :)

Hey Ziggy, with Khabibulin, the Islanders may clearly become the doormat in the NHL. With Tampa and the Rangers just a notch above them.

CYN...Islanders dont have the money to pay Nikolai. And yes theyd still suck with him, cause they lack scoring and a solid defense.

i dunno francine, altho good goaltending helps, you still need to be able to score goals, and tampa's not that good in that dept., unless they're playing the rangers (4) or isles (6) of course
