Is there a lack of offensive talent? Are Defenses that good now? Smells like the XFL in the NFC East, doesn't it? I know He Hate Me is on the Eagles practice squad now, but it seems like the rest of the XFL players are now whereing the uniforms of the Eagles, Giants, Redskins, Cardinals, and Cowboys. Was this past weekend (Oct. 29) a Halloween costume contest for them?
Eagle lose, Giants lose.... Aweful right, no.
The fact that the Redskins won, the Cowboys won, and the Cardinals just played kept them all one game out of first in the NFC East. That's aweful.

In fact now that I think of it... The NFC East of today reminds me of that horrid AFC central division a few years back.

The Rams lost. Care....

The Bears score 37?!? Nice. Keep it up boys and you'll make the Fridge proud. In fact, It may be time to break out the video gear. I am sure that MTV cannot wait for the Shuffle 2002...

OH and the Vikings... YOU SUCK!!! You let the Bucks score 41??? and you couldn't get more than 14??? Mike Alstott...129 yards??? Your lucky he didn't have a heart attack from all that running you let him do... YOU STINK!!!

i don't think anything is wrong with the NFL, things are interesting with the vikings sucking, and the bengals and browns a .500 team, just look at what one offseason can do...

Ill take an NFL where there are new teams winning every year and everything is competitive over a league where its the virutally the same teams in the playoffs every year, and the same team winning the World Series every year.

nothing is wrong with the NFL, sure im pissed that the Giants lost, but the NFL is the best league in all of sports. I love seeing new teams becoming successful almost every year. It was like 80's football with the 49ers and the Bears this past sunday, it was great.

yeh right banger like theres never any dynasties in football...how many times did the steelers, 49ers, cowboys and broncos win it. how many diffrent teams went to the bowl in the nineties?
the bills were in it 4 times cowboys 3 times denver and the packers twice. dont tell me a diffrent team is in it every year. the bottom line is there are dynasties in every league. yankee haters try to make excuses for the yankee greatness but sometimes you just gotta tip your cap

Am I talking about the 70's NFL? The 80's NFL? The 90's NFL?

No Im talking about the NFL Right now!!

Im talking about a league where the Rams went from the losingest teams in the 90's to Superbowl Champions and most dominant Team in the league. Im talking about a league where the Baltimore Ravens went from not making the playoffs in ages, to Super Bowl Champions in one year.

Im talking about a league where the Bengals and Browns have been laughing stocks and doormats in their division, to teams that are above .500 half way into the season. Im talking about a Chargers team that went 1-15 last year, and now is 5-2.

This has nothing to do with the past in the NFL, Im talking about the way the NFL is right now, and the way Baseball is Right now.

When the Royals and Pirates are in the playoffs, then Baseball will be up their in competiveness.

The NFL has started to loose me with free agency. They play 16 games a year and it is hard to really care about a team if their roster has a 20% or better change every year. Players I like are on different teams far too often.
PLUS it is hard for a team to gel and play as a unit with that kind of turn over.
For me football was at it's best in the 70's.

I'm torn about the NFL.

Don't get me wrong, football is my favorite sport, and I have followed the game since I was 5. It's just that with free agency and the salary cap, too many players move to different teams each year. So in that Ken, I agree that it can be hard to follow a team when there are so many new faces each year.

I can say that the NFL is definitely the most competitive of all professional sports leagues, and it's because of the salary cap and free agency that the smaller market teams (like my beloved Steelers) can be competitive. It's a double edged sword. There will never again be a dynasty in the NFL like the Steelers in the 70's or the 49ers in the 80's, but if I had to choose, I'd pick the way it is now.

Mrs. Moosen,
It's not like there weren't any other great teams in the 70s besides the Steelers.
The Raiders, The Cowboys, The Vikings, The Dolphins, The Chargers, The Rams all had legendary teams, players and units. That's what I hate about free agency a team is not together long enough to get an identity. The Steele Curtain, Doomsday Defense, Orange Crush, No Name Defense, The Hogs,Smurfs,FunBunch(yes I'm a skins fan) Purple People eaters etc. This type of group can't develop with the constant turn over of free agency.

And can a coach stay longer that 3-5 years anymore???

why should the royals and pirates be in the playoffs did they earn a playoff spot?this is a league of competition they dont give away playoff spots like the nba and nhl. the pirtaes were in the playoffs in the nineties and the royals won a title in the eighties. you want them to be in the playoffs more? arent you contradicting yourself?

I guess it is maybe just that. "Follow this logic," --- Free agency + salary cap = aweful

One note... With all due respect to the Steeler
fans... Is the Titans going to be moved to the NFC East with the realignment next
year? The was they played last night, they should... It would only figure.

This type of group can't develop with the constant turn over of free agency.

1st: I never said that the Steelers were the only great team of the 70's. It's just an example, and it's the first one that came to mind, so don't be so touchy.
2nd: I am not a fan of free agency. I can't tell you how pissed I was when Greene, LLoyd, Woodson, and Brown left the Steelers (just to name a few). I still fume about it. I just think you have to look at it from both sides. There won't be another Doomsday Defense, Steel Curtain, or Fun Bunch, but there also won't be years and years of the same games being played for the championships. How sick were the Rams' fans of watching the 49er's play the Cowboys year after year? How sick were you of it being a Skins fan Ken? I was tired of it. It's no fun unless it's your team who's kicking ass. The rest of the league suffers without a level playing field for competition.
I am a firm believer in loyalty. Free agency drives me nuts, but free agency has been around for a long time, and I believe the salary cap is the bigger reason that players are moving so frequently nowadays. The organizations can not afford to keep the "top talent" for long and remain under the cap. The "top talent" won't take one dime less than the next guy even if it means that the TEAM suffers. Loyalty goes both ways.

As far as a coach staying for longer than 3-5 years, if they are good at their jobs, or have patient ownership, they stick around. If they suck, then they get fired. It's a job. They gotta do it well in order keep it.

Dearest Mrs...
I was only giving my respect to Steeler fans, such as yourself, for a game well played by their team this past monday against the Titans.

I guess I figured that the Titans would put up more compition than they did on Monday. They played as well as the Eagles and the Giants... uninspired.

Sorry if I confused you.

Not confused voodoo, just wasn't sure what language you were speaking? Thanks for the clarification. Their real challenge is coming up this week against the Ravens though.

No they don't. If they are good they go for the money too. Parcells, Holmgren, they cash out and move along. Who is the Coach with the longest tenure with one team right now???
You cited the 49s and Cowboys of the 90s, but they were a couple lucky teams in the early days of free agency. The Cowboys drafted well before it started and signed long term. The 49ers just broke all the rules.
I HATED seeing Dieon in Burgandy.
I HATE seeing Brian Mitchell in Green. the Skins have had more quarterbacks in the last 10 years than I can even remember.
You're Steelers won 4 in the 70s but the SuperBowls were competitive and the playoffs were too. The Oilers and Raiders made good runs.
I don't need anymore superbowls of sub par talent like last year's.

This is an interesting question. I tought about it and can come up with two maybe three, can someone clarify?

1 Dan Reeves with Atlanta

2 Steve Merriccuci(whatever) from the 49ers

3 The coach of the Titans. Jeff Fisher I believe, right?

  • Free agency
  • 2 point conversion
  • Interleague Play(it might work in baseball but you only have 16 games in the NFL)
  • Salary cap
