John Smoltz Stays With Braves
ATLANTA, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- After being wooed by a number of teams, most notably both World Series participants, 34-year-old righthander John Smoltz agreed to a three-year contract Sunday to remain with the Atlanta Braves.

The deal, worth a reported $30 million, keeps Smoltz with the only team for which he has pitched at the major league level. Despite a series of arm injuries over the past four years, Smoltz was among the most sought after players on the free agent market because of his ability to start or close.

After 12 productive years as a starter, Smoltz became the Braves' closer last season and converted 10 of 11 save chances. He added two saves in the postseason and seems suited for the role -- provided his surgically repaired arm can hold up.

He was probably planning to stay in Atlanta all along.

Mets could have used him in relief after giving up Wendell/Cook in the July trades which apparently was their official concession. You would think after the way the season evolved that the Mets would try and get a few players to fill up that spot, but then again there's already a thread for that sort of stuff.

It would have been nice if the Yankees had gotten him, but there's other people out there. Hopefully the acquisitions will start soon.

I dont mind seeing him go back to Atlanta. I personally think he is finished. Especially if he goes back to being a starter. He is never going to be what he used to be, coming off the injuries and the age factor. He is nothing special anymore.

I don't think Smoltz is finished. He is what, 34, not too old, and there have been some amazing strides in surgery the last few years. He was pretty amazing down the stretch, and he is a gamer.
I HOPE he's shot, but I can't say I think its true.

I couldnt see Smoltz in a different uniform anyway. Hes a Brave through and through. I mean how good could he have done in NY anyway as a starter? I dont think heda been able to handle the pressure.

I'd much rather they let him start, it helps us. He could turn into a dominant, light's out closer. He isn't going to be as productive in the starting rotation as he could potentially be out of the bullpen.

Smoltz is far from finished. He's a kick ass closer, but probably will wind up eventually starting again when he's convinced that his arm is fully healed. He's still got another Cy Young year or two left in him.

Not even in his prime was he a Cy Young Pitcher, he surely isnt now. He certainly doesnt scare me. He is still at best a #3 pitcher if he starts. He would be better off closing.

In his prime, John Smoltz was definetly a Cy Young pitcher. In case you forgot, he even one a Cy Young award a few years back. He'll probably be a closer now, though, since his arm might not be able to handle pitching a full game. He'll be an all star closer, so it's cool. The Braves need good arms in their bullpen anyway.
