| PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Mike Piazza, who's made a career out of
playing in pain, missed the New York Mets' game Friday to have his injured
left knee examined.
The eight-time All-Star catcher hurt himself this week while running in a
conditioning exercise. At the time, Piazza and the Mets called it a sprain.
Piazza was scheduled to have an MRI in mid-afternoon. Results were
expected later in the day.
``I thought it was going to be totally better today and it wasn't, so I'm
concerned,'' Mets manager Bobby Valentine said after a 4-2 loss to Atlanta.
``He feels something.''
Piazza had a day off Wednesday, then was a late scratch for Thursday
night's game against Baltimore in Fort Lauderdale.
``I think they're going to get an MRI to make sure what they think is an
irritation or sprain is nothing more than that,'' Mets general manager Steve
Phillips said. ``Better be safe than sorry.
``If it's anything at all, it'd be some cartilage,'' he said. ``They want to know
so if it's that, they could do something so he'd be ready for opening day.''
Piazza hit .324 with 38 home runs and 113 RBIs last season for the NL
champions.
Piazza is a career .328 hitter with 278 home runs in a major league career
that started in late 1992 with Los Angeles.
Last year, Piazza was the NL's top vote-getter in balloting for the All-Star
game. Three days before the game, he was beaned by Roger Clemens of the
New York Yankees and did not travel to Atlanta for the event.
In 1999, Piazza was the disabled list for a sprained right knee. Piazza has
been on the DL only one other time, in 1995 with a torn ligament in his left
thumb.
Piazza, however, often has played in discomfort or been forced to miss
games because of nicks and bruises, usually the result of catching.
Piazza was sidelined for the last two games of the 1999 NL division series
against Arizona because of a swollen left thumb.
The Mets have talked about trying to move Piazza to another position, to cut
down the risk of injury from foul tips, home-plate collisions and batters'
backswings.
So far, Piazza has resisted efforts to shift him.

Mike Piazza who's made a career out of playing in pain, has a bone bruise on his left knee, an MRI revealed Friday.
A Mets spokesman said Piazza would be out seven to 10 days.
I agree that his time behind the plate is running out. I hope Mike starts to realize it too. He'll go into the Hall as one of the greatest catchers, no matter what the latter part of his career places him on the field.

| oh man, this better not be a lingering injury. We can't afford piazza out of the line up. Piazza has to put his stubborness aside and play some 1st base already. I mean, wasn't zeile a catcher once? Maybe they can platoon back and forth. I don't know...

| Actually yes, it's somewhat ironic, Zeile is originally a catcher, and Piazza was originally an infielder before he was called up by the Dodgers.

| Froy and CYN, I totally agree with both of you. They really should just move Piazza down to first cuz that way he'd have a longer career cuz the catcher position is just totally waring him down. The mets really gotta think of somthin if they want him to contribute in the latter years of his Met career.

| EVENTUALLY he will make the move. I think it is an ego thing (for now), so he can go down as the best hitting CATCHER in MLB history. He is in his prime and I can live with his defensive shortcomings.
If I'm not mistaken Ernie Banks made the move (to first) at the end of his career.
