Mets sign Benny Agbayani
NEW YORK, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- The New York Mets Wednesday agreed to a one-year deal with outfielder Benny Agbayani and also signed pinch-hitting specialist Mark Johnson and lefthander Bobby Jones to minor league contracts.

Agbayani, who was eligible for salary arbitration, will make $600,000 in 2002 and can earn an additional $350,000 in incentives based on plate appearances.

The Hawaiian native, who turns 30 on Dec. 28, played in only 91 games during an injury-plagued 2001 season, batting .277 with six homers and 27 RBI.

Agbayani was on the disabled list from April 9-25 with a chip fracture in his left wrist. He also fractured a bone in his right hand while swinging against Florida on Sept. 1 and missed the rest of the season.

Johnson, 35, led all major leaguers in pinch hits last season, going 11-for-27 (.407) off the bench. Overall, he batted .254 with six homers and 23 RBI in 64 contests for the Mets.

Jones, 29, spent the entire 2001 campaign on the disabled list with a variety of injuries. He began the year on the DL with tendinitis, then strained his right knee during a rehabilitation assignment at Class A St. Lucie on May 26.

Johnson and Jones received an invitation to spring training.
He's the only Met I like and now he's back. Johnson also played well last year.

Mets fans, comments? Any at all!?!

I don't like Agbayani as an everyday player. This doesn't change the fact that we need a solid starter in the outfield.

On the other hand, I like Johnson a lot. He's got a ton of potential.

Damn we cant give Benny away. The Japan deal fell through, and we even put him on waivers last year and San Diego ended up not wanting him. I dont like the guy as an everyday player either, but until we get another outfielder, we need him.

Johnson has great potential and great upside.

At 35 it's not called potential; its unfufilled promise

Benny & Mark Johnson are good role players and good guys; Mark Johnson has done several benefit events since sept 11th for fire & police families.

Johnson fills the role that Matt Franco used to fill, and he has some pop.

Mets have decent bench/role players; let's get the big OF we need (and NOT Bubba Trammell).
