As a Giants fan, it was a surprise to see Brett Favrre roll out into the clutches of Michael Strahan with less than three minutes remaining. I was on the phone and began shouting, "Oh my God, Strahan got the record!" I had to get off the phone and watch what most of the Giants fans came to see yesterday.

I knew right away it was a gimmie, but I didn't care: Strahan earned this.

Like the gopher ball served up to Cal Ripken, Jr. at the 2001 All Star Game or the annual tradition of giving the NBA All Star MVP award to the host team's players.

The Packers called a pass play when they didn't need one; in fact, Favre didn't need to be in the game. Several Green Bay players said a running play was called in the huddle and that Favre booted on his own, but the quarterback maintains the sack was not a gimmie.

Watching on television, I know differently. And so what? To be second all-time by half a sack going into the final game of the season is an accomplishment all its own. Being a full sack ahead of Lawrence Taylor, a half sack ahead of Derrick Thomas is amazing on its own.

So, Brett Favre and the Packers threw Strahan a gimmie. Big deal- Mickey Mantle's last home run at Tiger Stadium was a gimmie, but he still had to hit it out. Many argue Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s win at the Firecracker 400, the first race at Daytona since his father died there in February 2001, was also a gimmie, but he had to drive 400 miles to get it.

Sometimes things in sports are bigger than who can beat who on a given day. Or who can block the most prolific sacker in NFL history. Sometimes greatness has to be honored, even by the great.

I knew the Giants were out of the playoffs since they fell from 3-1 to 3-4. Despite Strahan's effort, they were not getting it done on offense. I did notice the Packers, though, and how strong they played and realized Favre has been in the league a decade now. They have a long road ahead to get to the Superbowl, but I am hoping they return to the big game.

They deserve it.

Who the fuck is Strahan that he should recieve the "gimmie"? He is not an all time great like the others you mentioned. He is an also ran. If someone threw LT a bone, when he is the greatest to play the position that is one thing. But to just hand a record over, ah na na.

Ripken, Mantle, Earnhardt,......Strahan?...nope.

I am glad he did it because I love the Giants, but not in that bullshit way. A homerun whether it is a gimme or not is still hard to do. A sack where the lineman gets out of your way and Favre lays down is bullshit.

Whuile i am glad that a Giant holds that record and not a Jet, i hate the way he got it. This doesnt take away from the fact that he was the most dominating DE of the year in the league.

He's one of the better D Linemen in the game. Its
not like he's a one-season wonder, like Gastineau,
who fell into the record. I think when its all
said and done, Strahan will be not be thought of
as an all-time great, but he could get to the Hall
of Fame. I think thats why Favre eased up on the
play. He showed the respect one great player shows
another. What the hell should Strahan have done
anyway? Ran away from Favre? Picked him up and
carry him forward? Hand the ball off

I was sickened by yesterday's events. It was horrible. Earn the record or don't get it, it's that simple. In my mind he only has 21 1/2 sacks. Put a fucking asterisk in the record book.

hey, Gastineau is a 2 season wonder.
Sure, it's cheesy but then again, the whole take-a-knee during the last 2 mins of every game is also cheesy.

I am happy for Strahan even if he is a Giant. But that's no way to get the record, I would have been more happy for him if Favre didn't lay down on the field for him. But he earned all of the other sacks, you can't take that away from 'em.

Fuck the Islanders and the Rangers! Go Penguins!
