Mayor: 'It is just not practical this year'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday that the city will not build stadiums for the Mets or Yankees this year because of its budget crisis.

"I think the city should have the best facilities for cultural and for athletic events that we possibly can afford," Bloomberg said.

"At the moment, everybody understands -- given the lack of housing, given the lack of school space, given the deficit in the operating budget -- it is just not practical this year to go and to build new stadiums."

A few days before he left office last month, former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani signed tentative deals with the teams to construct two new $800 million stadiums, with the city paying half of that cost.

Bloomberg expressed skepticism about the deals given the city's projected $4 billion deficit next year, but Monday's comments were his most explicit so far.

This makes a lot of sense. New York Needs a lot of things, Stadiums are not on the top of the list. Just think what it will cost the city even after all the insurance money is paid out, just to build what ever in the WTC site. And it's not like George or Fred couldn't build there own stadium if they wanted to.

Bloomey had everything to lose and nothing to gain. Rudy may have just set that proposition up just to help him get New Yorkers' votes in his next public office election.

The Yankees keep drawing more and more attendance every year over the past few years at the current Yankee Stadium, why build a new one?

It didn't seem possible before Sept. 11, even less now.

This gets filed under politics. Stadiums for Mets & Yankees have been very unpopular since sept 11th. What has been said, however, is more simplistic rhetoric rather than facts.

I've heard people say "don't give $800 mil to rich owners; let them build stadium like they did in SF.". Well, city wasn't going to give teams anything. City would float interest free bonds, and debt would be split by ciy / owners. not exactly the same as giving away money. City would own stadium, not owners, as in SF. SF stadium cost in neighboorhood of $390 mil; NY owners would contribute more money. Who owned the land that Pac-Bell sits on? NYC currently owns Shea & Yankee stadium, and must pay for upkeep, repairs etc. New stadium would be team owners responsiblity to maintain. "City & State don't build office buildings and let businesses use them".- WTC was built and owned by NY State, and only recently did they lease out building ownership.

These are but a few issues on a complicated issue. That doesn't mean I think NYC should spend money; it just means it isn't as simple a decision as people think.

PS - There is still possibility of a $3billion West side stadium for NY Jets & Olympics 2012.

Thank you Bloomberg!

It doesn't make any sense to build two ballparks back then, and it doesn't make any sense now.

We all would pay for them. (taxes, higher ticket prices, parking, etc.)

The yankees should move to Giants Stadium if George keeps on bitching about the "dangerous conditions" at that shit hole stadium.

For the mets, they can simple move a few sections, add some boxes, put new scoreboards and actually try to make shea resemble a baseball stadium.

I'm tired of these billionaire owners bitching and complaining about their stadiums. Make it with your own money and stop expecting the state to do everything for you.

Isnt Bloomberg a billionaire as it is? why doesnt he contribute to the building of the stadiums. I realize its not really possible right now, but later in his administration. Eventually the teams are gonna need new stadiums, cant keep putting it off forever.

Back to top, since today's NY Daily News
discusses in what horrible shape Shea is.

NYC, in typical bureacratic fashion, will probably spend millions to "repair" the stadium, which will just be window dressing. There are so many problems it would be better to demolish the whole thing and build something decent.
City is already spending $25 million per year to each team to "look into new construction"; for crying out loud lock Wilpon & Bloomberg in a room until they can figure out how to get this done without raping the public. It can be done.

Granted Shea is in need of a major overhaul, but with everything that has happened over the last year, trying to build two new stadiums for both the teams wasn't realistic. Its a nice idea, but they should use that money to rebuild where twin towers used to be standing.

Why should Bloomberg contribute out of his pocket to new stadiums? Did Steinbrenner contribute to Bloomberg's business empire? Let the owners pay for their stadiums or, at the least, let the voters decide on whether to set aside the kind of money it would take to build stadiums. I don't want my taxpayer money going to line these owners' pockets, any more than I want it going to pay for some lazy ass who wants to collect welfare and doesn't want to work for a living.

I don't know, why the hell should we have to? If someone wants a new stadium, let them fucking buy it. George can afford it more than I can.

It isn't that simple, that is why I said work it out.

Public Agencies have all sorts of ways they can encourage financing of buildings.
1) both stadiums are owned by the city, not the teams.
2) NYC pays (in one way or another) for quite a bit of private building. The World Trade Center for example, was actually owned by the Port Authority of NY & NJ, but most of the use was private.
3) the City is already obligated to repairs
4) There are ways of financing via bonds or tax incentives, etc, that don't necessarily raise taxes
5) the construction creates jobs.
6) stadiums are part of deal to try and get Olympics and associated revenue.

Be in favor or not, but be fair -
It is not the simple issue most people think,
not a case of "lets just give a gift to owners".

If you want to see a gift for rich men, ask why David Rockefeller receives about $500,000 from Fed gov't for farm subsidies.

I didn't say he had to pay the whole cost of the stadiums. I just meant he could contribute somthing to the project. I think he could afford it.
