Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Try and name some sports records that no one will ever surpass. 1. Cal's consecutive game streak 2. Joe D's 56 game hitting streak Name some more! "Now the seasons over, and I feel it gettin' cold. I wish I could take you to some sandy beach road, we'ed never grow old. Ah but baby you know thats just jive, but tonight's bustin' open and.... Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | Great topic. I don't think either of those are unbreakable. There have been like 10 people come within 20-25 games of breaking that record (including Rose at 44 games). It's very tough, but not unbreakable. Hell Benito Santiago of all people had a 34 game hit streak once. Someone could do it (NOMAR!) Ripken's record isn't unbreakable either. It's not really a record of excellence. It's a record of attendance. Someone just has to stick around and not get hurt for 15 years. Very unlikely, but not impossible. I would also say that none of the longevity records in pitching are unbreakable (Ryan's Ks, Cy Young's 500+ wins, 300+ losses 700+ complete games, and others) becuase you never know if some revolutionary pitcher might come in who throws underhanded (like a broad). Those softball pitchers don't tax their arm as much, so they could pitch 80-100 games a year instead of 30, and quickly surpass many of those records. I'd pick these (assuming that the amount of games per season don't change): Wayne Gretksy's point record (2,500+: 1000 points higher than anyone else) Gretzky's 200 point season Pete Rose's 4,200 hits Bill Russells 11 Championships in a major sport Napolean Lajoie's .422 batting average in a year Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points in one game Jerry Rice's 180+ touchdown receptions

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Pete Rose's hits record will be broken within the next 15 years. Arod is on track to do it if he plays something like 16 or 17 full seasons, it will happen and happen soon. I think the single season wins record (i think its 39, not sure though its something like that from the 1910s) will never be broken, only because people start one day in five instead of every four, so its impossible to get that many wins in a season. I'll give you my life, cause I don't own anything Seems like the bottle was all that I had until now I'll give you my life, if you give me yours somehow.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Doug, were you listening to Joe Benigno on the FAN last night, this was brought up as a topic of discussion by a caller. I dont see anybody breaking Ripken's streak. Gretzky's Point Total will never be broken. Cy Young's win total will never even come close, and nobody is breaking Johnny Van Der Meers consecutive no hitter streak.

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | quote: CLS, your math is WAY OFF. For someone to break Rose's record, they have to average over 200 hits for 20 seasons. AROD has gotten 200 hits three times in his eight seasons, and is averaging like 180 hits. He hits way too far down in the order. The only type of person who can do that, is someone who bats near the top of the order and doesn't walk much. Ichiro is 27, so he's got no shot. The only other current day player is Jeter. He's moving to leadoff, so that will help his chances a bit. He's currently averaged almost exactly 200 hits per season for 6 years. He would have to maintain that average for another 14+ years, when he'd be 41.

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | A few comments, and a few more records:quote:I'd say both are very improbable to be broken, but not too far out of reach to say it will never happen. The 56 game hit streak in particular is one that could possibly be broken by a good contact hitter who doesn't tend to swing for the fences. quote:What I wonder is, is it physically possible to pitch a baseball effectively windmill-style? A softball is heavier, which gives it more inertia, but I don't think you could get the same type of force behind a baseball. If you could, wouldn't it have been done, or at least tried, by now? With that said, I think Cy Young's records are safe, as is Ryan's career strikeout record, and so many others. Examples: Single season wins: Charlie Radbourn - 59 (1884) Ed Walsh - 40 (1908) Career shutouts: Walter Johnson - 110 Also, I agree, nobody will ever come close to Gretzky's career and single season points records. Some more: Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points in one game (especially with zone defense). Wilt's 50.4 single season PPG average. Rickey Henderson's career steals (around 1400, I think) Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters. Pete Maravich's career NCAA PPG average (44.2?).

Psychopath Registered: Sep. 01 | BaseballReference has single-season and career stats. I think that the hardest to break is the Earned Run Average record. Ed Walsh averaged 1.82 for his ENTIRE career. No pitcher nowadays can even do it for one season. Active leaders are Pedro and surprisingly, Johnny Franco. Honor our heroes. Honor their wishes.
