For Pre, During, and Post Game discussion of the League's Championship Games.

NFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK- JANUARY 27, 2002

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
New England Patriots (12-5) at Pittsburgh Steelers (14-3)
Not too many people would have predicted this as the AFC Championship Game before the year started, in fact I dont think you would find anybody who would have predicted that. the Steelers have been the class of the AFC this season, while the Patriots have been the cinderella team. Nothing more described the Patriots as a cinderella team than their stunning win last week in the snow against the Raiders. Controversy or not, the Patriots are here playing in the AFC Championship Game, and the Raiders are at home. The Steelers met a test last week against the Ravens and passed it with flying colors as they totally shut down Baltimore's inept offense. Its going to be tougher for Pittsburgh to be that dominant on defense this time, with Tom Brady on the other side of the ball rather than Elvis Grbac. But if the Patriots are going to win this game, they will have to rely on Tom Brady to continue his unbelievable run and even step up a notch. Antowain Smith is going to have a hard time getting his game going against the Steelers rush defense. Kordell Stewart and company had a good time getting past the Ravens excellent defense, they should do more of the same against the Patriots defense which is not as stellar. With Jerome Bettis back, the Steelers get a boost at Running Back and a good 3 back tandem with Bettis, Zeroue, and MaalaFala. I do expect the Patriots to be competitive and take this game right to the end, but the Steelers are too strong, they are better in more facets of the game, and will be just too much for the cinderella run of the Patriots to continue, as the Steelers will be heading to New Orleans for Super Bowl XXXVI.
SCORE: Steelers 21 Patriots 16

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Philadelphia Eagles (13-5) at St. Louis Rams (15-2)
Should be a fun and exciting game in St. Louis to decide the NFC Championship. The Rams arent the invincible team that people make them out to be. But they are team that will capitalize on the other team's mistake. They can be beaten, but you have to play on top of your game to beat them. You Certainly cant walk into St. Louis like Green Bay did last week, and turn the ball over 8 times and play sloppy. If you do that you will walk out getting pummeled just as Green Bay did. The Eagles have been very impressive in the playoffs so far, as they convincingly defeated Tampa Bay and Chicago. The Eagles are too good and well coached to make the same mistakes the Green Bay did, but I dont know if the Eagles are talented enough or capable enough to pull this out, unless Warner is off the game, and St. Louis makes some uncharacteristic mistakes. I expect the Eagles to be in this football game as well, but I dont think McNabb and the Eagles offense can keep up with the Rams. Rams win and head to Super Bowl XXXVI.
SCORE: Rams 33 Eagles 20

Steelers 27, Pats 21

A bad call by the officials will leave the Patriots with their just desserts.

Rams 48, Eagles 28

This game will be close at the half but will get out of hand with two quick TD's to start the second half by the Rams.

Alas, The Patriots will win this game.

I don't know the exact numbers but, The Patriots are like #25 in the NFL in yards allowed and I think #6 in points allowed. Kris Brown lead the league in field goal attempts by a very large margin.

This means that the Patriots are money on defense in the red zone, and Steelers struggle in the red zone on offense.

This will come down to Kris Brown field goals which is what everyone in New England is praying for.

Pittsburgh has a great Dline and Linebackers, but their Dbacks are pretty poor. It is rumored that Earl Holmes might not play. That would definately be good.

Since the Steelers always have such a QB rush, most of the time their Dbacks are going to be in man to man covereage. The one thing that Brady has been this year, is very accurate. He will be able to slowly tear apart the Pitt dbacks with man-on-man covering Troy Brown and David Patten.

It's gonna be tough for the Pats to contain the rushing attack of Kordell since the Pats are a pretty slow team on defense, and Plaxico could tear apart the Pats secondary since no one is 6' tall. However, Bellicheck is the man, Kordell is stil sketchy, and I see 3 Stewart interceptions.

I still see a close game but I say 20-13 Pats

I guess I'm going to stick by my early December picks made elsewhere.
St. Louis over Philly
The Rams are just too fast for Philly and their suspect secondary. Throw in Faulk to mess with the linebackers and I have a feeling this one isn't going to be pretty. Rams 38 - 7

Patriots over Steelers
I'm still not sold on Tom Brady but I think that the defense wills the Patriots to a win here. Patriots 13-6

I still feel more comfortable with Brady in and Bledsoe on the bench. A tough game no matter how you look at it. Steelers or Pats will be hard pressed to beat the Rams in the SB anyway. Oh ya, Rams over Eagles.

This was written by the Sports Guy on December 18th.

"Of course, there's one wrinkle that might throw everything out of synch, and you know it's coming into play at some point. Yup ... it's the inevitable "Brady gets injured, meaning that Bledsoe has to save the day" scenario! Has to happen, right? I mean, it has to happen. Right?

It could/should happen at any point during the next six weeks, but Pittsburgh seems like an ideal opponent; the Steelers have haunted Bledsoe over the years (even harkening back to his rookie season, when he fumbled against them on the goal line, costing the Pats a "W"). When you think about it, Bledsoe's career in New England can't just end after this season, not with him relegated to headphone duty, not without one last chapter. That's just not the way these things work.

But whether Drew makes one last dramatic cameo or not, the Patriots still couldn't prevail against a team like Pittsburgh, not on the road, not in January and certainly not with a Super Bowl trip in the line. The Steelers are hungry. You can sense it. "
Sports Guy

What a prediction.

Damn, great call, except for the fact that the Pats ARE going to beat the Steelers, it looks like that now anyway. I for one am very surprised about this game, i dont understand why Amos and Ma'afala arent being used instead of Bettis.

The Patriots need to keep their stupid penalties down. That could come back to bite them in the ass. Let's see what Bledsoe can do here though.

Edit: Damn that Steelers D.

Spoke too soon. 21-17 Patriots, and Pittsburgh has all the momentum.

All I need is for the Steelers to get a field goal and a touchdown for my score to be correct.

A jinx isn't what is killing the Patriots. The Steelers D is. Very impressive with all of the pressure they have produced. The Pats will be lucky to get out of this one alive.

Nice. The Pats pulled it out. Good job by Bledsoe. They needed to do some passing here and Bledsoe did the job decently. We'll see what happens during the week and if Brady gets the start in the Super Bowl. Awesome game won by the Pats special teams. And dammit Drew stop your crying you pussy.

The first thing Bellicheck will do is say that Brady is starting next week. He should. The second half showed why Bledsoe always played in close games and could never turn it on. He holds onto the ball way too long, and just stands there waiting for everyone to get open instead of looking at other options, which results in too many fucking sacks.

Hopefully Brady's ankle injury in very minor. Nice 1-2 punch today with a good defense/special teams effort. Damn, New Orleans again.

Hmmm, Bob Kraft doesn't seem drunk this time.

Damn, did you see the look on Cowher's face in his interview with Bonnie Bernstein? He looked like he was about 10 seconds away from snapping and tearing her head off. He's crushed.

They needed 65 yards and had 3 seconds to do it. Why on earth would they not Hail Mary it to actually get the ball to the endzone instead of hoping for even greater miracles by throwing it short?

That play was something right out of the Paul Hackett handbook. The only times I've seen that play work is in some old dated college football video.

Well, the Eagles showed a lot of heart tonight, on defense mostly. McNabb didnt look like he was comfortable at all, and looked like he was playing like he was in the beginning of the year. nd i feel so bad for Cowher, he had the team to win it all this year. Too bad Bettis fucked it all up, he should not have even played today.

Anyway, Pats vs Rams should be an extremely good game to watch. I'll go on record now by calling the Pats to win it, they are the hottest team, and seem to have IT, whatever IT is.
