Hanger-On Registered: Nov. 01 | This has to be the best trash talking I've heard since a prime Ali. Check this interview out. "It was great television when Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones jawed at each other via satellite on HBO after Hopkins had taken care of Carl Daniels and Jones was just minutes from thrashing Glenn Kelly. It's too bad we never heard from 'the Executioner' after his portion of the broadcast had ended. And with Jim Lampley becoming Ahmad (Rashad) Lampley to Jones' Michael Jordan, the post-fight interview for Jones was nothing more than a slow-pitch softball game between the two, with Lampley lobbing softball after softball question at Jones. Hopkins, who always has a lot to say, was silenced for one of the first times in his career. Now he would like to respond to Jones and his verbiage with one simple question: "Who's your daddy?" "You've been hearing the crazy Roy Jones stance of 60-40," Hopkins told MaxBoxing.com to begin his rant. "I'll kick your ass and all that. Now, it's time for my rebuttal and I want to go ahead and fire back. "The reason Roy Jones Jr. don't want to fight Bernard Hopkins is because I remind him too much of his father when his father used to kick his ass and throw him over the pool and make him swim." Damn, that's harsh, what's next? Accusations by Hopkins that Jones' mother wears combat boots? But Hopkins is only getting started. "And also he's having flashbacks when his dog got shot by his father when it bit his sister," the undisputed middleweight champ continued. "So I remind him of his father, Roy thinks I'm a bully. I remind him of Roy Jones Sr. I really came to the decision now that Roy Jones is scared of Bernard Hopkins, I remind him too much of his father when he used to kick his ass when he was younger." OK, at this point I'm pretty much speechless over several things Hopkins has come to the table with. Not that it matters, this guy doesn't let you get a word in edge-wise anyhow. Anytime you interview Hopkins, bring an extra set of batteries and a spare tape and let the good times (and quotes) roll. Hopkins is also unimpressed by the "studio gangsta" persona put on by Jones. "Where did a guy that feeds pigs and raises chickens try to become a city, Hip-Hopper with his hat backwards, looking like a babbling idiot? What is wrong with the guy? I mean, be proud you're from Pensacola, Florida, if you ain't from New York, don't act like a New Yorker. Now, he's this RoughRyder, Hip-Hop, DMX — Roy Jones Jr., the rap-artist gangster. You know what it is? The man wants to be me. See my history speaks for itself. I don't have to act street, I ain't got to look like I'm tough, Roy admires Bernard Hopkins, he's got a complex where he wants to be me. "Anytime a man makes a demo and goes across the world to sing '60-40' and makes a rap song out of it, he don't want to fight. He thinks I got under Trinidad's skin? I already got under his, because I remind him too much of his father." Oh, and about Roy's album, uh, no it won't be playing in Bernard's tape deck anytime soon. "His album sucks," stated Hopkins, beginning his career as a music critic. "And some would say, 'Well Bernard, maybe you're just jealous because you can't rap,' Nah, nah, Roy's not a rapper. Roy Jones trying to be a rapper is like MC Hammer coming out with the genie pants in 2002 and outdoing DMX. Roy Jones is a fraud and he's a wannabe rapper and if hangs with James Prince long enough he's gonna bring the 'Ghetto Boys' back and they're going to start acting like they're the hottest thing in rap this year." All right, that's, Roy, his father, the family dog, Roy's album, James Prince, Hammer and 'the Ghetto Boy's that Hopkins has trashed. Anybody else? "When is HBO going to get tired of it?" asked Bernard rhetorically, adding to his hit list. "When is HBO and the suits over there going to realize that they've been bamboozled and hoodwinked and making people get turned off with HBO completely. I mean these are educated Harvard, Stanford and Yale graduates over there and they're getting pimped by a country boy who lives in Pensacola who raises pigs and feeds goats." OK, add you can add HBO and the Ivy League to that checklist. But Hopkins is only getting stronger. When we finally had a chance to ask a question (we assume he had to catch his breath), we asked how the negotiations, if any had taken place, were going. "The situation is that Roy Jones wants to dictate to Bernard Hopkins what I should make, just like he did last February," Hopkins said. "And he's doing this through the media, he is making an idiot of himself. He's making my job easier. I'm envious that I can't do all the talking, he's doing it for me. I've met regular people who tell me, 'I like Roy, he's one of the best fighters, but he's afraid to fight you, Bernard'. I've run into different opinions but they all agree that Roy is making it difficult for this fight to happen. "Roy Jones will say and do anything to kill the fight and I wouldn't advise you or anyone else to hold their breath to believe Roy Jones when he double-talks. He told y'all that he's gonna go up to heavyweight, he told y'all that his father — who he wasn't speaking to — all of a sudden advised him not to. Don't hold too much stock in Roy fighting me." Even if Jones comes off his 60-40 stance and Hopkins off his 50-50 ultimatum, you get the feeling that negotiations are going to be difficult. The two egos and mindsets of these champions will always clash. "He knows he's not in control of me," said Hopkins, who is in Miami, Florida on vacation. "Those other guys who fight Roy, say, 'Thank you for giving me the opportunity and I'm going to continue finding lost children and have Roy say that I'm a good person', like the way he talked about his last two number one contenders — not that that's a bad thing. Or fighting a trash man, who's a part-time boxer, or fighting a cop, who's a full-time cop and part-time boxer." So, Derrick Harmon, Kelly and Ricky Frazier get added to the verbal assault of Hopkins, making light of Jones rash of suspect mandatory defenses. But Jones himself was critical of Daniels, who lasted 10 rounds with Hopkins. "See, when Jones ripped Carl Daniels, he was weak in that aspect of it," states Hopkins. "Because, I had a live duck, he had a dead one." During his appearance on Jim Rome's Last Word last week, Hopkins said that he would hunt down Jones (who was in Philadelphia for the NBA All-Star Game festivities) like a bloodhound chasing a fox. Alas, there would be no chase. "Roy Jones stayed in his room 'till Sunday, when he took a jet out of Philadelphia," Hopkins said. "All the parties and all the events that happened in Philly, he stayed miserably in his hotel room with his flunkies watching the door every night." So what if Hopkins-Jones II never comes to fruition? Well, if you can't beat them, join 'em. "I got three belts, I got three mandatories, I'm guaranteed $3 million a fight," says Hopkins. "I don't think that's bad money. I can live off that. At age 37, to get into the ring for 36 minutes to make $3 million, I'll live off that. So I got a mandatory due with the WBC in April, I got another mandatory with the WBA by the end of the year, I'll just sit around and fight my mandatories. Hey, Roy did it for five years. "But if Roy wants to fight, then we can bypass the mandatories and get an exception from the IBF, the WBA and the WBC. I can do a super fight with Roy Jones, Oscar De La Hoya or a rematch with Trinidad after his bout with Hacine Cherifi, so I have options. What options Roy got?" But he reminds everybody not to get ahead of themselves, this bout is far from being made. The biggest obstacle to the undisputed middleweight champion getting his rematch is the mindset and attitude of the undisputed light heavyweight champion. "Before we put the cart in front of the horse, Roy's gotta get off that 60-40 junk and stop being 'Boy' Jones and be Roy Jones," Hopkins said. "I thought that all the abuse his father put him through gave him some cajones." Wow, this guy can even trash talk bilingually. But Hopkins makes it clear that while he wants this rematch, he will do it at terms he deems equitable. "My career is not based and predicated on fighting Roy. I told America Presents that. I told the judge that in Denver and I'm saying it now," Hopkins said. "Even though they laid it down that Roy Jones was the goal and that I had to sacrifice everything to get to Jones. And Jones is still saying 'no' after I accomplished the greatest thing a fighter can accomplish, which is being undisputed in his weight class and beating a great fighter like Trinidad. So what I'm saying to you is that Roy Jones Jr. is turning off a lot of R.J. fans that still like his ability but dislike his heart. "I remind of his father. Roy said it best, to Roy his father was bullying him, even to a point where one time he wanted to kill his father. Or do something to his father when he was tired of the abuse. I remind Roy Jones of that bully. I remind him of that because of my demeanor and he understands my personality that it won't be the back seat with me. It won't be he's doing me a favor, he's giving me a payday, that I'm so much of a nice guy. He won't have that control he has over those number one-contenders, it won't be over me, he won't be in control." And that's about the only things Hopkins has to say when it comes to Jones. For now, that is." | ||||
